Clunking noise when towing caravan

Hi when towing and going over a bump there a loud clunking noise. I've eliminated the caravan as I towed it with the wife's kuga.

Any ideas what it could be?

Could it be this as it bangs on the bolt that holds the tow bar in both sides?

Any help really appreciated as we go away Friday?

Do you have a detachable tow ball? Is it a good fit into the mounting point?

There was a recall for sloppy fit removables a while ago.....

I had this a couple of years ago. Got local LR garage to check all tow bar mounting bolts. All took half a turn or more. Have you checked the shock absorber on the towing hitch?

No it shouldn't but there is an easy way to resolve the issue use a couple of good strong cable ties to slow the movement/stop it.
This is what I did as it was driving me crazy Smile

errrmmm what is a harmonic damper do....
I was under the rear of the car sorting the detachable tow-bar with a safety plate and noticed these large blocks either side - they swing around and appear loose.

What are they for and you seem to indicate they shouldnt move around

They should move around freely and are designed to improve and give the magic carpet ride. If you have seized or dampers full of mud preventing movement the ride becomes uncomfortable and people often feel sick.

They are there for a reason and should move freely. Bit more info on them here. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuned_mass_damper
