Another brake caliper question! |
|
Hi all - just a quick one. Nearside rear caliper was sticking leading to worn pads. Freed it off, but needs further work, so just after a few thoughts:
replace the caliper and if so, aftermarket or genuine - there's a big price difference.
or strip caliper down and replace piston and seals?
It's not in a bad state, just wondering whether it's worth the fluff stripping it down?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

I would stick a decent aftermarket one, find an OEM one and you can't go far wrong.. Disco4 MY16 SDV6 Landmark Black
Disco4 MY12 SDV6 XS Orkney Grey (Gone)
Defender 90 200tdi Completely rebuilt.

I would go with after market caliper.
go cheap and then you can replace often (if required) with these it seams

Got elcheapo britpart ones on my D3, been on there for over 3 possibly 4 years now.
Got same make ones on my 90, mate had the same on his 90 and 110, totally irrelevant but trying to say they are decent for the small amount of dosh they cost.

I have brand new (both) Britpart rear calipers in the garage that I bought for my last Discovery
On fitting them I could not get a seal where the pipe attaches, I bought new copper washers and no amount of fettling sorted the problem. I refitted the old genuine calipers and they sealed fine.
In saying that have fitted Britpart calipers to previous Discoverys and had no problems

take it you've seen recent posts about the two differing calliper types fitted ? aluminium vs. cast-iron IIRC. .

I'm having a non Landrover caliper issue that has left me a tad stumped.
My Mitsubishi PHEV NSF caliper is starting to play up. Car is 4.5yrs old. No corrosion at all, seals are fine, no leaks, top piston action like new. Bottom piston not so. Issue came on "overnight". Pads probably half worn at 29k miles.
I thought I resolved it last week by working the piston only for it to stick today at lunchtime. (Hot wheel, CVT gearbox struggles, heavy electric use). Left work this evening....fine again.
Was going to bleed the caliper to rule out any air but apart from that I'm flummoxed.

Maybe ask on their forums. It could be a common issue
Or as it’s that new. Ring HQ and say it’s not fit for purpose.

Searched but it doesnt appear to be common but they did have a problem with the rear calipers. No recalls on the front.
Have a call out to them.... plus, doh, its still under warranty. (5yrs is confusing!)
Just taken it for a spin. Fine again. New caliper me thinks.

I couldn't get the parts so I left it with Mitsubishi to sort out.
Took them 10days (as they couldn't get the parts either) but new front caliper, new discs and pads under warranty.
