Ticking/clicking after engine turned off |
|
Sometimes when I turn off the engine and step out of the car I can hear a clicking noise near the underneath of the engine. I think that this might be related to an intermittent suspension fault. Sometimes, after the engine is turned off, the suspension sinks over time, especially the front right. Other times there is no sinking, even overnight, which is when I don't hear the clicking.
My suspicion is a poor electrical connection somewhere.
If I am right, where do I look? If not correct, does anyone have any other suggestions.
Thanks in advance

Check the noise isn't your egr valves doing a cleaning cycle.
Suspension dropping says get busy with the spray bottle and washing up liquid and look for leaks. Plenty of info about this.

Clicking can be the air values opening to release air from the struts. As requested by the computer.
What causes this you may ask? Possibly a faulty height sensor input. But which one!!

If there are leaks the suspension it would drop every time, which it doesn`t !!

Ticking stops by the morning. By then the right front suspension is down to the stop. Some of the other corners have gone down a bit. Everything comes up to normal when I start the engine.

If you pull the suspension fuse whilst it's ticking, if it immediately stops then you're on the right track investigating suspension issue.
Could be something cooling down? Any fluid loss issues? .

It sounds like there is a problem with the front right height sensor, the EAS will try and level to whatever it reads as the height set, the clicking will be the EAS solenoids operating but it does sound like the height sensor isn't registering a height change which is why the valve block is being triggered many times.
Check the height sensor has free movement and the rubber isn't binding on the hanger on the upper suspension arm, if you have the 4x4i screen, see if there are any anomalies as you change the suspension height using the switch.

Good suggestion about the fuse, will try it in the next day or two.
Thanks for your reply

My D3 is 2006 so no 4X4i screen. Will check for free movement in a day or two.
thanks for the reply

Year does not effect 4x4 screen, cars spec does, plus I believe it can be added with IID etc, but it is not really worth a toss!

It is if it helps with suspension or steering angle sensor diagnosis.

It is still a mystery. I haven`t followed up the suggestions yet. However the other day I put the car in my garage, and could hear no ticking after stopping the engine. The next morning the suspension was still up, all round. To my mind this rules out a leak. Today I cleared all the codes and will see what transpires in the next few days.
