Broken / snapped steering rack... anyone seen this before.
I have had an absolute moment of madness and taken on a v8 disco as spares / repair.
It has a steering issue / noise, amongst what will no doubt be a long list of repairs.
I ended up towing it the 150 home with my disco, and a hired car trailer. (most quotes from towing firms to do the job were coming it at well over 700 quid) bloody hell they are heavy.
Anyways back to the thread subject....
once home i jacked it up to see what is actually wrong with the steering.
The symptoms were pretty simple, no issue at all turning to the right - could be done with one finger.... but a very noisy clank and no power assist to the left. So now with the wheel off and it jacked up i can see the mount point of the rack itself has literally broken away, it has shiny new tie rods, but the racks mounting bolts are well rusty and don't look they have ever been off.
Is it possible a prior owner/mechanic has damaged the rack when changing the tie rods ??
Anyone seen this before ? also I hope the 2.7 rack also fits the V8
Will upload some pics when i get a chance to change it.
TIA

I'd like to see that, could it be be corrosion related? If not I'll bet LR wouldn't mind a peek too!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Could it be accident damage?- check the wheels for signs of damage. Could the tie rod(s) have bent through accident damage? It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Many years ago I had a customer who's car suffered a snapped steering shaft. The car was 14 or 15 years old and the subsequent investigation into its failure was of VERY keen interest to the manufacturer BL.
Not the same circumstances, but its naive to think critical safety related failures are of no interest to the manufacturer regardless of age.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I think JLR's interest in the vehicle stops about 14 or 15 minutes after it's driven out the showroom I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Not 15 minutes before it leaves the showroom ?

Thanks for the replys
Well none the wiser to the actual cause of this break tbh
No obvious damage to the suspension or wheel's that I can see. The hydraulic pipes are rusted to an unsafe level so have to order some of those.
Anyone got the forums advance factor's discount code handy?
Took a pic of it before dismantled this morning

Possibly a kerb impact or a jacking incident gone wrong. Looks like someone had lots of spare scutch coat lying around their workshop
She's a rusty old girl in the rest of the Chassis is like that.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

She certainly is.... What makes it worse is some clown has painted right over the flackey bits..... Front to back. Will be great fun getting it all off to do correctly.
Mine is a year older and prestine in comparison.
Sadly the diesel has to go thanks to this ulez .
This will hopefully cure my v8 itch.... But at this point I have not even been out of first gear in the project motor. It needs all the arm's, disc's, brake pipes and then look at the air suspension and handbrake!! I must be bloody mad.
