Key barrel issues.. Any advice appreciated.

So today went to put the key in the ignition, turned it & the barrel was jammed, spent ages playing about, wd40, cleaned key, disconnected battery, re connected, hooked up to second car incase it was a low battery. In the end had to call out the AA.

They managed to get the key to turn using a lot more brute force than I dared but advised me not to turn the key back to 0 position incase it can't be turned again. I am now left with the car on the drive, key still turned to 1 and disconnected the batter so I can connect it back up and drive to work later.

What does the foundation of knowledge sugest? Could it be a case of removing & cleaning the barrel? Get a lock smith of some sort or worst case take it to dealer & pay out?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Tom

Not uncommon, but easy to fix.

The plastic shroud under the steering column is held on with a few torx screws and you may need to move the adjustment lever (if fitted).

Remove the light bezel and electrical connections, insert key, turn it one click and with a suitable 2 mm tool to depress the plunger from underneath to remove the barrel.

From there a combination of tapping and blowing the crud out is easy.

Setting minds at ease is a key part of this forum. It's also nice to keep the 1 or 2 hundred pounds that a dealer would charge safe in your bank account.

All done, thanks for the help Robbie. Think I may have taken it a little to far when stripping it apart for cleaning, had a serious panic on when some of the little peg bitts fell on the floor. All back together & smother than ever. Thumbs Up

Problème de barillet de clé de contact

Bonjour,
