Shackles, Strop and Rope? |
|
I don't know what to buy with regards to shackles and a tow rope for my first overland trip, or better still have I just brought some bits without looking into it enough . Doh.
Brought 2 shackles 4.75T but not the one that screws into the shackle but the one that pass freely through the shackle and has a nut on the end. I was advised if the bolt was bent they are a nightmare to get off.
Brought 2 Hooks at 4.75T with 2 swinging connectors to connect the hooks to the Strop which is 6m 2tonnes with a breaking strain of 14 tonnes. This would give the freedom to change strops if there was a problem.
Have I brought the right stuff or should I have brought a rope for towing instead of a strop, Have I gone the right way about it?

Like you, i bought strops/shackles/ropes etc.
Personally i now carry a 1 x 6M rope with hooks attached at both end - thus you don't need shackles/strops etc
never needed anything else so far....

Sounds fine to me.
The key is to keep the kit in good condition. Keep the strops out of direct sun light if possible.
With regards to shackles, as long as they are tested, which yours sound like they are, keep them clean. If a oin is difficult to get in or out, it may be bent and should be disposed off.

You'll find that a good quality shackle would have the load rating, with
raised letters on it from the casting process. As a rule of thumb, always
go for 4 ton + rating on a D3. D3 bullbar-spots-roof rack with spots-ladder-long range tank-swing out spare wheel carrier- upgraded tow bar-dash console-internal water tank-duel awnings-drawer system & T T.

A good tip is to not tighten shackles all the way (screw it in all the way, then untighten one or two turns), as if fully tightened, the force of the recovery will tighten even further and make the bolt very difficult to unscrew.

Sometimes difficulty in removing the shackle pin can be avoided by the use of three or four part shackles. These have a nut and bolt instead of a pin with the four part shackle having a split pin to prevent the nut from vibrating loose. Use D shackles for single strop/wire pulls and Bow shackles to connect two strops/wires to the vehicle.
