dont know if this is right but nearly every time i start up the compressor runs for about secs even if it has been only left for about 3 hours it never appears to be lower one side

When you get out of the car the car rises on its suspension due to the reduction in load. After a few seconds, air is released to bring the car down to the normal level. When you return to the car your weight lowers it again so the suspension must be topped up to bring the car back up again. Perhaps if you started the car without getting in the compressor would not need to run.
To complicate things a little, the compressor does not drive the suspension directly. There is a reservoir for compressed air next to the left hand chassis member, in front of the compressor. When the ignition is on the compressor is used to maintain pressure in the reservoir. This means that the time that the compressor runs may not exactly correspond to the air being used.
