Weak Tailgate Actuator?

Hey all,

I have had a new problem when my D3 is sat in the hot sun, where I think the actuator isn’t strong enough to open the rear top tailgate.
Switch was replaced a couple of years ago, I hear the sound of the top tailgate attempting to open, and it struggles using the fob 3rd button too.

Is this the sign that the tailgate actuator is weak or maybe dirty?

Tailgate opens after either 5-10 attempts, a couple of swear words and pushing of the tailgate top door…

Thanks in advance!

It's a much easier job when the boots open. I wouldn't like to try opening it's when it's 31 oc outside you'll cook.
Do it now.
I did mine a few years back and mine went intermittent like yours the problem with mine was the plug wasn't pushed into the actuator properly (no click).
Check that as well.

How did you fit your switch was it plug and play or did you join the wires. It could be a dirty/ corroded joint if you joined the wires

I joined the wires when I replaced the switch. I don’t think it’s the joint as electronically it tries every time, but doesn’t open unless it’s been in the garage and the boot is cold.

Sounds like another job - thanks all!

To fit a new switch pry out the old one the cut the wires as close the the old switch then slideshrink down on some heat shrink then strip and tin the wires ready for soldering.
Then strip and tin the new wires the solder together slide heat sshrink down over the joint and shrink
Test new switch if all ok push it back into the hole.
M switch is off a ford galaxy I think

Switch was already replaced, I’m going to replace the upper tailgate actuator as it sounds like it’s trying every time I replace the switch so think the solenoids weak as someone above suggested Smile

Sorry wrong end of the stick.
I would change the actuator and cable while you can open the boot, as it really is a crap job to open the boot from inside the car.
The opening of the boot only some times might be the "L" thingy starting to crack/bend then it will fall off.
do it now before its to late. I have done it twice and its an easy job when the boot is open.
good luck
