Tailgate failure with dog box in boot |
|
Hi,
Considering changing my rear boot mechanisms... just in case.
Am I right in thinking that if the lock fails, and I have a large TransK9 dog box in the boot (that it's impossible to squeeze past), then there's no way of fixing the lock from the outside?
At 130K, maybe it might be worth doing...

Do it John!
I had a raft of parcels ets when mine went for the 2nd time at 80k.
The latch has been beefed up (the L shaped part) so should hold for ages now.
Do it.

I have the same exposure as John, but with a later car the last of the D3s - MY09, which has done 38k miles.
It would be VERY difficult to get in the boot of my car as I have a full height dog guard & a large TransK9 dog box.
Why both - the other half of the boot is often loaded to the roof with my shooting ghear, and that of the other two or thre guys travelling with me.
Does anyone know when the latch was beefed up please? If I don't have a beefed up latch I feel I should be changing it, but how do I tell?

Thanks Nick.
I bought my D3 in March 2009, and thought it was one of the last built. I now realise that it left the factory in July 2008, and its chassis number is 9A 494nnn.
How much please is the improved latch?
Should I fit it soon, or is there any way I can predict the remaining life of the existing latch?
Regards

Some have built in an emergency release cable, whereby a bit of wire rope is attached to the mechanism and left poking out of the carpet panel with a keyring or other such item attached so that WHEN it fails the next time, you can reach in and pull it without going through the rigmarole of trying to get the panel off.
