Suspension fault

Over the last few weeks within the first 5 mins of any journey I get the dredded bong followed by the 'suspension normal height only' message and the orange light on bottom left of dash. I have also noticed the compressor seems to run every time I get in the car. Could this be the pump failing or something else? I'm going to Newquay in 2 weeks on a stag do with a car full and don't want it letting us down!!

That's how my compressor went. Eventually its going to be on all the time. My fix was a new compressor from TLO. Thumbs Up

I would raise the vehicle to off-road height one evening, unlplug the battery, and pull the suspension fuse (this is important or it will attempt to auto-level, which makes it difficult to pinpoint an issue). Take a look at where each corner of the vehicle is, and then look again the following morning. If you notice any of the corners, or front and rear dropping, you have a leak somewhere that is causing your compressor to work overtime. If it is a single corner, it may be the air shock. If the front or rear has dropped equally on both the right and left side, it may be the front or rear valve block, respectively. If the car hasn't dropped at all, the error could be due to a faulty sensor, or overheating compressor.

Any leak in the system in general can make the compressor work overtime which overheats it and eventually burns it out. It doesn't do much good to replace the compressor only to have it burn out again because it is trying to compensate for a system failure elsewhere. The air dryer can also become gunked up and cause the compressor to work overtime (this can be replaced), and I believe that there have been cases of issues with the exhaust valve on some compressors. There are compressor rebuild kits out there if this seems to possibly be the issue, it comes with new desiccant, seals, etc. I have fitted a new compressor on mine myself, and with the instructions found on this site, it is only about a 2-3 hour job at most for a mechanically minded novice. I did have to go get a firmware update though, as the new compressor is an AMK, and I was getting a code that the compressor was filling to quickly, which the local dealer said they had never seen before. They flashed the ECU, and so far it hasn't come back.

My new compressor usually doesn't run for more than a bout 120 sec. at a time at startup, usually less, and certainly not frequently after that. It typically runs the longest when first starting it up or when my wife uses access height when parking and getting the kids out or in. Not sure if this is consistent with what other people see, but I believe it is.

I am certainly no expert on this topic, but this has been my observation and experience when dealing with the Disco 3 suspension.
