Taken out warranty and had it pay out more than it cost. Happy you had it.

Warranty or not to warranty...that is the question?

As an owner of a MY10 and having owned it for 2.5 years with nothing really going wrong I have not paid to have a warranty with the thought that I'll use the saved money for repairs. With a possible crankshaft sensor + trigger wheel replacement looming I thought a poll of peoples experiences could be interesting.

Maybe another choice....

Taken out warranty, not yet claimed, but content.

That's me.

Ran aftermarket warranties for 7 years on the old girl, never had less out of it than I paid in. Sometimes better off by a few thousand quid. It always amazes me that they renew!! Laughing Laughing

On my own from end of Sept due to miles, that's scary!!!! Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Missed that option out, sorry, I agree should have had it but can not seem to add it now.

the most important option is also missing, "took one out, had to replace major part (engine) and it didn't pay out!"

A halfway house is the AA breakdown policy, pays out up to £500 if you breakdown, so can take the sting out of some bills, also relatively cheap.

warrantywise. To be totally fair, I did get all my premiums back, as it wasn't entirely their fault, the main dealer was as much/more to blame.

I will never pay for one again .
Had a Motor point gold years ago just when RAC bought them out half way through .
Obviously part of the terms and conditions is the service regime being carried out .
Not a problem but costly and we all know they short cut where they can, I prefer my own schedule which was easy enough on the D2 , but couldn't so cost more again
Every claim bar 1 on my D2 turned out to be wear and tear , after RAC took over I add !!!!
Only interested when its a catastrophic failure , on a D2 front drive hub it cant happen as it will give the 3 amigos before then, 9 times out of 10 , so it wear n tear !!
After the supplying dealer 3 month waste of paper I on my own .
May be a bigger issue on the D3,time will tell.
Phil

Ran a D3 for 3 years after LR warranty expired

1st year took out warranty, made a few claims and broke even
2nd year took out warranty and didn't need to make a claim so lost out
3rd year didn't take out warranty and front dif failed costing £1k then TC and gearbox failed and it just wasn't cost effective to fix so got rid Big Cry

I took out a three year warranty via a dealer when the JLR one ran out. Got back in repairs what it had cost me to buy, but the warranty terms dictated they had to do servicing, so have paid out more than double what my local indy would have charged.

Now it's six years old, the warranty doesn't cover enough to be worth having (in my opinion).

wonder how many have a successful claim after the oil pump chucks in the towel after a Main dealer belt change.
Shocked

OK

Disco 3..... Now 10 years old....no warranty.....gearbox issue year 9....basically I'm in pocket
Jag XK......now 6 years old.....extended marks warranty.....two small claims of LED rear lights....4 put of the 5 replaced....but another major issue not covered....(more on this later)....I'm out of pocket on this one
Freelander 2.....7 years old....no warranty ...no issues.....money saved

I was told in no uncertain terms to get & keep the XK under warranty by a friend who had one too...one engine wearing light ....£4500..00 bill

Above all its a gamble....the money you don't spend save for the repairs

I'd say it 's very much dependent on if you have a sufficient contingency fund to cope with any major breakdown or not.

When I had a WD warranty for a while on my D3 before I sold it, I had very little cash to hand and fairly illiquid investments. Whilst I could have used credit to cope with a really big bill, I felt more comfortable having "insurance" in the form of a Warranty that would (in theory Laughing ) cover such an emergency. Especially as I also have two cars with no warranty. Our Toyota iQ runs out of manufacturer warranty next year, I'll not bother with an aftermarket one on that. Thus, now guaranteeing that it will self destruct Laughing
