What's this vent near the steering wheel?

What is this vent for near the steering wheel?

When I had my dash apart today, I could see that there was a white pipe on the back of it. So I would assume it was a heating vent. But then there is also an electrical connection - so what is that for?
Anyone know?

it's dual purpose...
Its both the 'boing' launch port and the cabin air intake point for the HEVAC temperature sensor Wink

I'm guessing it could be the air temperature sensor for the air con?

How much of the dash would you have to take apart to get just to the gubbins behind that vent bit? I've got a steadily-cooling cabin, and I've been told that appropriate foam stuffing somewhere around there can improve the working of the HEVAC temp sensor...

the bit of trim around the vent just pulls off - the time on the TSB is 0.1 hours to complete Wink

As TFC says, the trim around the centre controls comes off. Once you know how to do it, it's easy.
The clips are only at the bottom (two on each side), so pull (very hard) at the bottom and pull towards the gear lever, as shown below.

The panel is held in place at the top by two lugs above each air vent.
