Which is the best 12V fridge/freezer |
|
Ok now, I dont want to start an argument similar to the tuning discussions, but....
Which 12volt fridge/freezer is the best. My trusty Halfords cool box packed up the weekend so I thought I'd invest in something a little better. £200-£300 ish
Ive looked at the waeco etc but there are so many to choose from...
It needs to be big enough to cool beer but small enough to stay in the boot all the time without taking up all the space..
Thanks Duncan

I have an Engel MT35D - it's a fridge / freezer (down to -18C) and very low power. Also runs off the mains and will chill quicker than a domestic freezer. Lives in the boot and is pretty much silent. They are a tad expensive, but I have seen them pop up on ebay now and again so you might be lucky. Certainly worth keeping an eye out.

This is on there now - new, but comes in a bit over your budget D3 HSE V8...

If you can afford the extra get an Engel. Very hard to get one second hand at a low price. 06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

National Luna http://www.nationalluna.com/refrigeration.html They have the cooling tubes covering all of the internal surface area behind the lining. Some manufactures only have the tubes covering the bottom half. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Thanks Guys,
I was hoping to use my "small" cheque book though. Maybe if I think about it for another few weeks my cheque will have grown Duncan

Dunc - my tuppence:
Apart from size, a couple of very important factors are power consumption and actual cooling capability (ie. how many degrees below ambient can it cool)
The new national luna's have very low power consumption - my 74l fridge/freezer uses less than 2.5A and can cool to 61degC below ambient!.
My old "minus 40" draws more than 5A and can only cool 40degC below ambient.
Depends what you need it for, but if you are doing long trips, the double-door is great with being able to set different temperatures in each compartment , 'cos otherwise the missus gets upset when the lettuce goes black but the beers are just right.
Oh, and National Luna is a South African company
Come on, buy one, we need the money

I chose Engel because (excluding the obvious ability to chill beer ) it has only 1 moving part, so figured it would be reliable and also the lid comes off (suprisingly useful - no really). Also, it [the MT35] draws only between 0.7 and 2.5 amp depending on temp set and ambient, but mainly because it is very low noise electrically (probably due to the low number of moving parts), which means no interference on my radio install.
