Will not start and rough idle following breakdown.

The beloved D3 has struck again... was pottering along yesterday down a dual carriageway and started slowing down for a roundabout, whilst slowing down car lost power as it came to a stop and cut out, no engine system fault or flashing dash just died.

Refused to start again and had to get AA to recover me home. AA guy jumped car to get it going, but it sounded terrible like it was misfiring, revs varied between 550 - 750 rpm and chucking smoke out the back end, battery light flickering briefly and eventually stalled, refusing to start again. Quick set of readings on diagnostic showed:

Fault codes:
P1621 - Immobiliser code words do not match
P0087 - Fuel rail/system pressure too low
P140A - Exhaust gas recirc sensor C circuit low (EGR valves are blanked)

HPFP - 30MPa.
All 6 cylinders outlet balance between 950 - 1050.

Had a new fuel filter approx 1500 miles ago and LPFP pulling around 3.5 amps

Has anyone experience anything similar? Or point in the right direction for what to look at

TIA

Josh

Briefly started the engine after charging the battery

Engine will rev when in neutral or park but once put in forward or reverse rpm stays at 800 and will not rev or move car even in low range.

Also found injector 2 has been leaking on the copper washer and got a carbon build up around top of the injector. Not sure if this is linked to the rough engine at all?

No other fault codes have come up other than

Stripped drivers side rocker cover to find the timing chain has snapped and top part of tensioner is smashed to bits.

Is the driven camshaft (closest to oil filter) the air or exhaust side of the manifold?

Thought it maybe.

The outside bank is exhaust.

Try changing the chain and tensioner and start it.
You have nothing to loose.
Check for any broken followers and replace.

Otherwise stick a second hand head on it.
Not too bad on right bank

Does the chain have a con link or is it a full strip for locking timing off to remove the cam shafts?

No quick link im afraid. Need to remove camshafts to fit the chain and tensioner. Nothing too difficult just time consuming.

Someone else with a broke chain started like that.

Hopefully just fuel in exhaust maybe

Had a quick play this morning with car, no fault codes showing and no smoke on start up or when idling.

Started to smoke once engine had warmed up 65C + little bit of smoke when idling then a fair bit coming out when revving and engine under load then would go back to a little bit of smoke when tickingover. Coolant level not dropped so bit stumped where to look next?

Injectors offset reading:
1 - 0.9
2 - 1.01
3 - 1.13
4 - 0.87
5- 1.02
6 - 1.09

All injectors reading 1k when engine held at high revs.

Have finally got round to having a mess with the car and somethinga still amiss with it.

Car starts first time no problems and doesn't smoke at all, left it idling till warm and no signs of smoking then either. Took it for a drive down the road and starts smoking once under load, to the point where I cant see through rear window. Pull back up at home and it continues to smoke for upto 5 mins then stops smoking completely until driven along the road again.

Would have thought any excess diesel in the exhaust should be have burnt off by now?

Has anyone had any similar issues to point in next place to have a nosey?

Injector offset can only be read at tick over, remove the injectors and look for damage on the tip, don't run the engine with the injector disconnected.
What colour is the smoke?
Have you done a compression test ?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I've seen that when the car hasn't been used for many months.
I would repeat the trip to see if its a real fault
