16 plate D4 HSE- will it hold its money?

I'm 1 year into my D4 HSE in black. I wanted to own one before it came to an end. I loved the style, I think the boxy style is iconic and very study looking. When I got it the dealer said that they will hold their value when the new D5 came out as did the old freelander did when the disco sport was released. Looking st the prices I don't think they are holding as much as I expected (maybe I expected too much) but I'm keen to see if anyone has had any good P/X rates on theirs?
I will keep it probably for another year then maybe swop for a D5 if they are what they cracked up to be or poss a Range Rover sport.

Don't believe the hype, I had many offers off dealers and they were well off the pace, £2k less than webuyanycar, or equivalent.
The car is desirable, but that doesn't mean dealers will pay more

I think I'm going to be upside down in it based on the current market prices. Even webuyanycar show lower than ideally I would need.

I have kept a regular eye on We Buy Any Car with this and my previous Disco and the values are very strong, just as they were on the FL2 when the DS was launched. I'm glad to say that I didn't have any difficulty achieving the WBAC price when I traded my old one in 3 months ago either.

My D4 is sold at the moment yet my D5 doesn't come until April, so it's in my salesmans best interest to give me a good price, he's already told the future owner to expect a strong price. I have an entry level SE, not many around, my ones even better as it has xenons, the buyer jumped at the chance when he viewed it on the D5 launch night.

These cars will hold their value for a while, but they won't stay high forever.

If a dealer is offering less than webuyanycar.com then walk away as they are way off the many. Always done better selling to a dealer but then I've dealt with the same dealer for 10 years.

D3/4's are, as we all know, amazingly versatile vehicles They'll always be a market for them, as they're pretty much the last and the best of the rectangular box 4x4's.

Perhaps they'll be a demand for good lower mileage used D4's, especially EU6 models. More likely, IMO, the prices at the lower end of the market will hold up well. Similar, although for different reasons, to the Landcruiser. A decent used Amazon VX is still big bucks.

I've seen D4's for sale used as the same price I paid new nearly 12 months ago so I would say my deprecation has been kind so far.

Time will tell when the D5 has been out for a bit.

Certainly when I bought my 16 plate D4, there was a bit of a rush from buyers wanting the last of the D4's as, like myself, they weren't sure that the D5 would suit them.

I'd say they'll be a few current D3/4 owners and others who will end up buying late model D4's instead of the D5 for a while after the 5 has been out.

Much depends on the new Defender and when it arrives I think.

I've just bought a 66 reg D4 Landmark with 5 miles on the clock as I couldn't find anything else that could provide the same versatility as my current car. I went to see the D5 and yes it is great inside, very comfortable etc but I just couldn't make my mind up on the exterior and it just didn't feel like a car that I wanted Thumbs Up

A period of bad weather, snow ,floods etc is what is needed, always has a positive effect on the secondhand values for good 4x4's.

As for now just take comfort from the fact your D4 will depreciate at a far lesser rate than some more mainstream models.

Plenty of models are only worth half retail price after 1 yr

I haven't seen the D5 yet, let alone established if I'll fit in it. It really doesn't inspire me though. I know this as I haven't bothered to look at in on the LR website or spec. one to my choice etc.

I'm not ruling out owning one in the future, but it's a lot of money to pay for a vehicle that I feel is compromised (for my needs) compared to the D4. Sad

I specced a D5 up to the same spec as my MY2015 HSE so chose E Diff, cameras etc and it came out at nearly £12K more than I paid for my current car in September 2014. It's a nice car but I don't think it £12K nicer than the D4 Confused

It depends who your asking and under what circumstances

Ive been talking to many dealers of many marques about PXing my current D4 against their similar models. All of them have a list of more than MY D4s new list and made pleasantly surprising offers for mine.

I had a private tentative offer for a near forcourt price as it was his dream spec but his CFO (wife) seems to be scuppering his plans Laughing

I think it will have an impact but they will still be desirable to some people, they are a well proven and very versatile machine. The Euro 6 will be appealing for years to come but I wouldn't bank on them holding current values once the D5 hits the streets.

By jacking up the price of the D5 (comparing model for model, engine for engine) so substantially, the existing value of used D4's could be maintained quite easily when the D5 is launched. The D5's will need to depreciate heavily before they suppress D4 prices.

For instance, I bought my 11 month, 12,900 mile, old D4, two months ago; I paid just over £25,000 less than the new price of an equivalent D5. With a limited supply of good used examples, there's no reason why that cost gap should have to grow for the D4 continue to sell well.
