Hi Guys,
I am a little further down the road to fitting an oil cooler for the auto gearbox to ensure I don't get water / glycol inclusions into the gearbox. Thought I would report what I found now instead of waiting as it is quite important : The Kenlowe 13 row cooler ( AT13LTA or RX1572 ) is not recommended by them as a REPLACEMENT unit for existing cooler within the water radiator, only as a booster together with existing cooler system. Kenlowe recommend that we use either the 25 row or 34 row units. I'm sure I can fit the 25 row but am going to check if I can get the 34 row cooler in. These can both be used IN PLACE of existing system. 34 row unit is 330mm wide x 263mm high --- I think the unit will fit but the fixtures and pipes may be the problem.
Keep you posted.

Hi Gert, Have to admit to dragging the lead a little. I have got the cooler kit from Kenlowe - looks very nice quality. I am hoping to start fitting to D3 within the next 2 weeks but first I am possibly going to ZF for them to fit steel G/Box sump and seperate filter ( replacing existing plastic set-up ) together with complete change of oil. I am told by ZF that only filter needs replacing after this job and not the sump plate as well.
Chap I went in and spoke to suggested oil change closer to 100 000 than 180 000 klm - latter may be too late, ON AVERAGE, due to oil deterioration. BMW 4 x 4 with similar boxes overheat oil and get seperate cooler fitted timeously, unless they don't mind reco box prices of +/- R32 000. Basically, if towing, I was told to watch oil condition closely. If at all smelly or burnt looking - GET IT CHANGED ASSAP !!
All these little bits of info' help I reccon', espescially when relevant to SA ambient temp. conditions. Now found a very helpful chap at ZF, unlike my first attempt by 'phone.
When job's complete, I will still be posting 'photo history.
Regards all

Hi Bob, no problem sounds that you are on the right route with ZF. Mind sharing the info and contact for conducting the filter conversion and oil change? Did they give you a quote for it and are you dealing directly with ZF?
Then what is the differnce between an oil + filter change and the double flush?
Thanks

Hi Guys,
Completed the job at ZF yesterday. Everything 'tricky poo' and smooooooth changes. Very pleased with service there and believe they did what they said :- Remove sump plate and filter, Replace plastic sump plate with steel sump and independant filter, full flush of box and refill with correct oil.
Now for the auto-box oil cooler ! I am trying to source smaller hydraulic fittings at present as I have a little"quart in pint pot" situation with the Kenlowe unit bought but still think it is possible --- I still have nightmares of glycol seeping into gearbox .

Hi Discoroy,
Oil for auot box : Apart from LR Castrol, you can get a price from ZF for their ZF LIFEGAURD 6 - full synthetic for use with ZF auto box fitted to D3. Just had mine serviced at ZF and that is the oil used - flush and refill.

Hi Guys, I have now finished the installation of the Kenlowe 25 row oil cooler and I am pleased withy the result . I am now faced with the problem of posting a 'photo strip record of the procedure - finding that a lot more difficult than doing the job !!!
Any body able to coach me on this? --- simple words please, I'm a mechanical engineer not IT endowed!!
