2012 D4 Snapped crank - NZ
Hi there
I have 2102 SDV6 3ltr D4 that snapped its crankshaft. I have done 231,000 kms in it but have serviced with main dealer as per their schedule. It has always been maintained.
I know if I google it and look in the D4 section on the main part of this site it appears to be an ever increasing issue.
Land Rover NZ say it’s failed due to high kms and due to its age there’s nothing they can do.
How many owners here have experienced this please? Apparently only 7 have been recorded here in NZ and JLR don’t deem it to be an issue even though they have released a SSM but there is no support until it becomes a technical bulletin.
The cost to repair is way more than the value of the car now. Am I expecting too much from JLR? Is it unreasonable to expect a modern engine to do more than 231000 kms without a major breakdown.
Keen to hear what you think
Thanks
Jase

Unfortunately it’s really difficult to tell how many failures that there have been, as many people posting about it seem to be just joining in to complain, without having had any direct experience of it. Or, there are people who have experienced it, but have had 8+ year old cars, bought used from independent dealers, without LR service histories, or even service histories at all, yet still expect a new engine.
If you’ve owned it from new (you don’t mention that) and it’s only 5-6 years old, with FLRSH and was only that many kilometres old, I’d hope that LR could show some flexibility although, to be fair, there are other “Premium” manufacturers that wouldn’t give you the time of day from the moment that the warranty expires!2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Thank you for your reply.
Yes I have owned the car from new and always had it maintained by the dealer. I obviously had a shock with the cost to fix, but I haven’t come on here to complain as such. I’ve had other cars and put over 250,000kms on them and never missed a beat.
I love my D4 and want to be loyal to the brand. I’m just trying to gauge if this really is a common fault or Ive just been unlucky. JLR deny any issues but are trying to help me so far. The goodwill offered is appreciated but it still leaves me a bill more than the cost of buying another D4 (if I could find one)
My biggest worry is that this is a known fault with these engines and after paying to fix it might happen again.
Cheers

Sorry, I hadn’t meant to suggest you were complaining, far from it
Yes, there have certainly been instances of it and it’s darn hard to tie down real numbers, but I’d suspect that it’s down in the <1% chance per annum, at average mileage so you’ve certainly been unlucky.
It’s good to know that they’ve offered some goodwill. If the rest of the car’s okay, I’d be inclined to swap the engine and attempt to get another 231,000 Kms out of the car 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Jason, that's a really crap situation you're in: LR claim they have fixed this on MY12+ engines, but we all know this is BS, since there have been reports of MY16 engines breaking the crank.
In short, the new engine that you get from LR could break its crank as soon as you roll out of the dealership, or it could go on to do another 200,000km, but there is no way to tell what will happen.
If you sell this one and manage to find another D4 within your budget, the same thing could happen as well.
Seeing that LR are willing to assist in some form, perhaps your best option is to get the new engine and then insist on them providing a 2-year warranty on that.
good luck boet, I feel for you --

Any engine and I mean any engine on the planet should just run and run until its worn out and not snap major parts.

More importantly, the issue to be addressed seems to be the extortionate amount that is charged to replace the broken engines.
Is it normal for manufactures to charge more to replace an engine than the value of the vehicle?
In these days of environmental issues, fairly young Discovery's will meet an early demise in the scrapyards due to uneconomical cost of repair.
I dread to think what it would cost to build a whole D4 buying parts from a dealer, well over £250,000 I would imagine Discovery 4 HSE

What seems even worse is they won’t provide the parts to rebuild the engines, so you have to replace them at a silly cost!

Surely Land Rover claim the cost back for the engines from Ford/Puegeot.

That would mean they admit they have a problem. Plus Ford prob built the engine to LR's spec, incl the crank.

In Oz, some people are replacing their blown motors with those from Ford Rangers. Is this an option in NZ?

Not from Ford Rangers - completely different engine - is a 5 cylinder Puma engine. Though a guy in Coffs Harbour has put one of these in a Defender.
I think you were thinking of the 2.7 out of a Ford Territory which is a cost effective option for a D3 or 2.7 D4 but the OP has a 3.0 so no options there.

They have admitted there is a problem because there is a TSB ...the issue is it's entirely sporadic
