Advice new to green laning - Cumbria
Afternoon peeps
All being well I pick up my new D3 at the end of the week, will be mainly using it for work however want to get in to a bit of green laning.
I live in Carlisle so have the lakes on my doorstep. Any one have any advice on getting started? Worth going on any courses?

The single most important thing is to make sure you're only driving where it is legal to do so and acting responsibly. Have a look at www.glass-uk.org.
You can book on to commercial tours or just go with a group or club for free Don't go alone and make sure the group is planning a route suitable for you and your vehicle. Some people like a nice easy-going day, others like to push their modified vehicles to the limit and don't care about doing damage.

Have a look on "The Lake District Landrover Meet" Facebook page. Their up your way and meet up every Wednesday I think. Mainly Defenders and D1&2 but the odd D3 does go out now and again. You may even be able to ride shotgun with someone to see what the lanes are like.
Not been out with them myself but they'll know the area well I'd have thought

Yeah wouldnt dream of going out on my own, and obviously want to stay legal.

As Dave says,
Trailwise is also useful.
You need to be careful as some lanes are very straightforward and others are challenging, you wouldn't want to go up Parkamoor for your first every lane.
Also, you should consider the following.
D3 in tip top mechanical condition
Tow rope or strap min 5m
Couple of shackles
Uncle Rays steering guard
AT tyres
Food
Flask
Tools
Spade
Jack
Sense of humor.
Couple of mates if it all goes Pete Tong.

If you go with a reputable green road guided Tour Company they will provide all the necessary recovery gear mentioned and more besides! They will probably cut back the nasty scratchy bits; offer guidance and support through technical sections, have a route planned, that they have driven and research consistently and will take into consideration the most and least experienced driver / vehicle, provide two way radio communications for convoy vehicles and take lots (and lots) of photographs and share these with their customers. As mentioned just in case it does go Pete Tong, as well as having the skill, knowledge and experience in the likelihood of said Tong moment occuring – just saying Club N.E.R.D.s

After leading a group with a D4 in at the weekend you also need waffle boards and teach it to breath in through the narrow gates & bridges.
If you use trailwise make sure you check what the people making comments were driving.
The Lake District Land Rover FB group are great, however probably not to start off with. The last trip I got invited on was night laning on the Old Coach Road which is a serious challenge in daylight for a Landy. There have been several rescues needed and one overturned vehicle that I know of recently on that lane.
As for commercial tour companies, some are great, but the Lake District has one of the worst as well.

Thanks all, super useful to hear everything from you guys.
When it comes to commercial tour companies are there any you would suggest? (and not by the sounds of it.) If people aren't keen on naming and shaming openly a PM would be super helpful so i dont fall victim to them.
Found the Cumbria GLASS group on FB, just waiting to be accepted. Looks like there is plenty of info out there though which is good.
If anyone knows of any days in the near future where there might be possibility for someone to ride shotgun id be very keen.
As far as vehicle mods are concerned what are the essentials?

Why not bring it up to Kielder for one of our 4x4 Safari's - a fundraising event for the local Mountain Rescue or look out for a tour by All Terrain Tours. They do green lane days across the north of England.For details on the next Kielder Safari click visit the Kielder Safari website

You don't need any modifications to go green laning, there are plenty of lanes drivable in a standard D4. When you're ready to start getting a bit more adventurous, the first thing I'd go for is some all-terrain tyres and then start adding under body protection to the front, sills and compressor.MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added
