Why on earth should we jail the guy? The cost that’s already been rung up on his behalf whilst at the Embassy - £16 million according to the BBC, we don’t need to add to it. Rolling Eyes

Case should have been deserted and then we could have extradited him, who cares what happens to him so long as he’s not here.

Oh and there need to be a change in the law to allow our Police to enter an Embassy in this situation. It was simply taking the p Censored s.

Yes he should be jailed as he was a fugitive from UK justice by jumping bail.

If he was not jailed for jumping bail it would have given the green light to other people to jump bail.

Also whilst he is locked up in a UK jail it gives the UK court system to decide on any extradition requests from a third country.

Personally I hope that once he has served his UK jail system he is deported on a plane going direct to Sweden or the USA and let them deal with him as they see fit.

As for British police entering the Ecuadorian embassy without being invited? Banging Head Banging Head Banging Head

Under the Vienna Convention

Quote:

Article 22
1. The premises of the mission shall be inviolable. The agents of the receiving State may not enter them, except with the consent of the head of the mission.

If British police entered any embassy in the UK WITHOUT permission then all UK embassy abroad and their staff are at risk from being invaded by foreign agents.

UK police were invited in by the Ecuadorian embassy so no law was broken.

apparently he had a plan to escape to Notre Dame and claim sanctuary. Bit extreme, perhaps, but the French got wind of it and took preventative measures.

Skipping bail is small fry compared to what he is wanted for in other countries. So we get to lock him up for 11 months, that’s a big wow, but an even bigger bill for keeping the b Censored d.

As for the Geneva Convention, it wasn’t designed to keep a non Ecuadorean National accused of crimes away from the UK Police or extradition for ever and a day and if it was it needs changed. Embassies in this country shouldn’t been seen as a refuge for murders, rapists or any one else accused of a serious crime, period and vice versa for our Embassies abroad.

The Vienna Convention, not Geneva. The Vienna Convention is ratified by 192 countries, even the nasty ones, so changing it is not straight forward. We could decide unilaterally to discard it but then all of the UK's embassies etc would be unprotected and open to abuse by host nations. Indeed, should one of us require protection or assistance, we would be unable to obtain it.

Is it unfortunate that Assange was able to use the system in such a way? Yes. Is that grounds enough to spend years and countless fortunes changing it? Nope.

As for his conviction by the UK courts, he broke our laws whilst on our ground so we get first crack at him. Those wishing his extradition get second crack and will, no doubt, be making their respective cases during his period of incarceration.

The thing about wanting to live in a society with laws that protect us, is that we have to accept that those laws also sometimes protect those we dislike. That's the deal.

Lets start with sending the bailiffs into, well where shall we start?

1) USA owes £11.5million

2) Japan owes £7.6million

3) Nigeria owes £6.5million

4) Russia owes £5.6million

That is congestion charges

How about non payment of non domestic rates

Sudan, Bangladesh and Iran all owe over £100,000 each

How about non payment of parking fines?

Lets just send in the bailiffs, if you don't pay we take it away!

Yes I can just see the Yanks and Russians liking that!

However I am sure London would be happy to get the extra £100 million

I forgot

The Vienna Convention? The Vienna Convention?

(Of course, under international law, the Vienna convention was subsequently superseded by the Vienetta Convention, which enshrined in law the right of everyone to choose a pudding other than Black Forest Gateaux at a Beefeater Steakhouse)
