Magnetic mount is great for temporary installations. K40 Magmount was one of the best CB antennas money could buy. You will make a nice circular mess of scratches on the roof if you leave a CB mag-mount on for any length of time.......The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

Thanks - do you think you could avoid that problem - and have it still hang on - if you put a piece of transparent self-adhesive film on the spot you were going to mount it...?Have my new year Disco..! Atacama Sand, active diff, active headlights, hi-ice, cooler, sliding loadspace floor, window tint, MP3, Mantec plate, roof rails, mud
Another good CB aerial is the K40. Has the advantages of no big spring at the bottom, and also is easy to remove the whole of the base and whip with a 1/2 turn. No tools. It's also very easy to tune!!
Have had 2 K40's on both accasions the whip snapped and was lost somewhere on a French motorway, the best antenna I have forund is the Wilson 1000, it is expensive but has 40% more gain than the K40, range is excellent and when mated to a 100 watt burner, well it's just It will handle 3000 watts. Plus it has the benefit of a more 'standard' mount, which is great for changing antennas, ie Wilson for road and open work and swap to Valor 300 (just remember to turn the burner off ) for offroading under trees and the like, basic PL259 fitting, I will try to get some pictures.I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Everyone to their own, the unique twist base is what sells it to me for quick fitting & removal when needed....
With a whip length of only 1.5m it won't have any more gain than the K40, most likely less. Unity gain on 27MHz is about 2.7m with a 1/4 whip, so anything less than that is -dB with coils matching the impedance.
The best you can have is a stainless whip 2.7m long with no coils or gimics, not that practical though for every day use. Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

Question for Uncle Ray.
Which model of Sirio antenna are you using? I like the look of the tightening lever thingy

Been there, done that..... Doesn't work! The more you put between the mag and the roof, the more scratches you can encounter. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

I have been following this thread with interest as its been years since I used my CB but I know how useful they are in convoy etc. I just realised however that my mag mount is not going to hold on the glass of the Alpine roof!
Has anyone got any recommendations for quick release mounts of any kind that are not magnetic, or should I just bolt something to the roof rail (no rack) - problem is I don't want to have cable hanging around when CB is not in use so would prefer to remove the lot.Disco3 is now gone but not forgotten. Waiting for Disco6 with full aluminium construction weight reduction and hybrid engine...

I would recommend using one of Ray's mounts with the standard so259 connector and leave the cabling in. When not in use the antenna can be removed and a plastic cover cap fitted to the socket. Very unobtrusive. If you run the cable down behind the top rear tailgate and take it into the vehicle behind the rear light cluster it makes a very neat job. You really would have to be looking to see it! Cable can then be run to the front of the car under the side trim etc. Saves having to faff around with cables etc each time you want to use the CB. Rear light pops out with 2 screws so very easy job. Most on here have done it this way!
Cheers, Richard.
