I think I read in one report that Chris Rock has previous form bad-mouthing Smith's wife.
Must have known he was on dodgy ground..

I think it's staged.
Smith is 6' plus and depending upon who/what you read around 80/90 kg.
He works out and is fit as...
That open handed slap (see picture) was a powerful right and Chris Stone seems to brush off the impact and almost immediately be able to carry on.
No way. No way at all. He'd be on the floor minimum and would be dazed if not more if the hand had caught his ear and the resultant ear drum damage...
Faked for Oscar attention.... show ratings fell last year and they want publicity.
Just my view..Jim

I thought he continued very quickly after the hit - and no attempt to deflect or defend himself.
Not in the same league as Matt Damon and Jimmi Kimmell.

Yeah, watching it, it looks staged to me. Not many people can take a full smack to the face and not at least stumble back and take a few moments to collect themselves before going on.
Watch this from 18s to 23s in slow motion - set playback speed to 0.25 - and the slap looks staged. Also, look at Smith's face as he turns round. That's a bloke trying not to grin/smile/laugh.

Who knows, many a big, fit guy can’t fight or punch to save their lives. There could also be sound distortion due to the presenter wearing a mic.
However, that apart, Smiths foul mouth rant afterwards tends to point towards it being genuine, but it’s only an opinion.

What prompted Will Smith to change from laughing at the joke to going up and slapping Chris Rock?
Did one of his wife's boyfriends tell him to slap CR?

Exactly that, he was laughing at the joke, from the comedian and host.... on live TV, with the audience and billions of viewers. Only once he saw his wife's face, was it suddenly not so funny....
People can no longer be the butt of the joke anymore, they are far too busy waiting to be offended.
If you don't like it, get up and leave, simples.....acting like a spoilt brat on live TV is just pathetic.
And if you really must "defend" your wife, then punch like a man, not slap like a little

Smith has now apologised. Seems it wasn't an act. Have to say that if that's how he hits, he better not get in a fight with someone that does hit. He'll be out of it in seconds.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

The slo-mo clips of the incident look staged to me; the slap that hits a shoulder, the sound of it, the anticipation it was coming, the two smirking/grinning immediately after, etc. but the further bad-mouthing by WS on returning to his seat all looked genuine.
If it was a set up then it all looks to have gone up for WS since, potential loss of award, kicked out the actors union, effect on future work, a potential '#metoo' moment for him if others come crawling out the woodwork on any past?
