Smith and his wife should have simply walked out without saying a word. It would have been far more effective.

Fairly sure it was staged. Chris Rock stands there, Smith walks up, slaps him, turns and walks away. Chris Rock stands there and says "wow, Will Smith just slapped the crap out of me".
Smith then gets the Oscar and makes his speech about protecting family just like the person he portrayed in the film did.
And it's got the coverage they were looking for with most outlets covering it in one way or another. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I don't think it was at all staged.
It will certainly give the 'Academy' more views, but if it doesn't do something about it then, contrary to their statement, it does condone violence.
You can smack a comedian for making a joke at the Academy ceremony and then a few minutes later receive an accolade from them.
The people from the Academy who headed to Smith after he assaulted Chris Rock didn't go there to eject him from the ceremony - which is what they should have done - but instead, consoled him.
Unless they take action, the Academy has shown that, if you are famous and liked then you can hit someone for what they say, and that's okay. Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Getting a 'laugh' at another persons expense is always risky, hats off to Will for sticking up for his wife.
Maybe so called comedians can revert to writing jokes as opposed to taking the p**s.

There was certainly nothing dignified by either persons conduct, period. A couple of overpaid idiots behaving worse than schoolboys.
I did wonder what the ruckus would have been if the one throwing the slap had been white or even the other way round?

I felt that it would be inappropriate to post on black-on-black assault/violence.

It was more dick-on-dick, rather than black-on-black.
We will have reached a truly integrated society when we see two grown men acting like , rather than two black men having a pop at each other.

And don't google 'dick-on-dick' if you're at work.

It was a cheap joke, yes and unnecessary and un-funny. But the slap, in context, was no better than a Saturday night nightclub response to an "are you looking at my bird" type punch-up
Smith shouldn't be promoting violent responses to inappropriate behaviour especially so publicly.
I don't believe it was staged based on Smith's shouting too, it wasn't just the slap.
