D3 vs D4

Hi,

I made the mistake of looking at some one year old D4's yesterday, and started considering an upgrade. I am now wondering (for those of you that have upgraded from D3 to D4's) if there are any down sides / things you miss (apart from the bank balance) ?

Or are there any must have items you would look for on a D4 ?

Simon.

Hi Simon,
I was thinking exactly the same! I love my Disco3, but she is a troubled child at times & I'm wondering if (more than anything else) JLR have managed to sort out the consistency in providing a reliable car?
Mi Disco 3 is like mi kids....

I love it, but I just wish it wouldn't have so many tantrums!

Downsides:
I don't think the seats are as comfortable?
Cup-holders in the wrong place
Bottle holders are the wrong shape
Nowhere to hang your keys!
Less storage (cubby holders) around the front
Don't think it looks as good as the original pure design of the D3

Upsides:
Brillant 3.0 engine pulls like a train. (almost call it sporty)
Just as reliable as my D3 (which was!)
Handling feels more positive
Love the DAB radio
Mirrors fold in when I park
Did I mention the brilliant engine? - that's what it's all about for me.
Not depreciating as fast as my v.old D3 was

Like most newer models, the D4 is more refined than the D3. It seems to have taken another step closer to its RangeRover siblings IMO.
The lack of placing the key in the ignition takes some getting used to.
The 255 3.0 is an absolute peach compared to the 2.7 and fuel economy is slightly better (in my experience)

Its essentially the same car from an aesthetic point, just improved where it can be...If you're going from a "toyed-up" D3, then I reckon you would miss the same toys on the D4.

I had an 07 XS, and now have the MY12 GS (I added cruise/towpack/privacy)....the specs are almost the same apart from the Bright Pack (fogs/puddle lights/footwell lights).

Love the DAB radio too.

The seats in my D4 are a lot more comfortable than my previous D3's seats.

Never take them out of my pocket, so don't find that a problem.

I think the D4 looks a lot better than the D3 - still like the D3's but IMHO the D4 looks better.

I do miss the storage shelf that was under the ashtray in the D3 though.

How about installing 3 litre lumps into 2.7 vehicle.
I bet a BAS mapped 2.7 is not far off a 3 litre job anyway.
 In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Down and out's Velar
In UK - Dare not say on this Forum
Gone - Lots of Lode Lane vehicles.

Did 97k in my D3 and have done 34K in my D4
Loved my D3 (first Land Rover, first 4X4), D4 looks better IMO, more comfortable, interior better quality feel, engine better and (slightly) more economical, Air Con feels more efficient and DAB great
To be honest though - all the above is very marginal - I changed because of the age of my D3 and I'm lucky enough to get a car allowance from work that (virtually) funds the car

Hi all,

Thanks for your observations and thoughts. Bow down

To cut a long story short, I traded the D3 HSE in for a D4 HSE. Here are my Pro's and Con's.

Downsides:
Cup holders, too few in wrong places
    Less driver storage
Terrain Response / Height / Hi-Lo transfer box controls now in wrong place
Prefer the functional design of the D3

Upsides:
Its been said before, the 3.0 engine is great. (The torque more than the power)
I find the seats more comfortable as I am tall
    Phone integration
    Better brakes

And of course its lower mileage and still has some LR warranty.

Now the long wait for the paperwork to go through before collection. Sad

Zermatt Silver / Ebony black interior / Jan 2011 D4 SDV6 HSE

Locking rear diff, cameras, premium audio ...

The only thing I am likely to miss is the D4 does not have adaptive headlights / corner lights which I find useful.
