D4 Replacement
Our D4 is getting on, and if the model continued to 2018-2019 I'd probably get another D4, but knowing them the way I do after 12 years of ownership I think we need something newer. Plus a low mileage 16 plate D4 is ridiculous money!
I'm leaning towards a RRS 2018-19 age. But these, the FFRR & D5 all are demanding similar money for age/spec/mileage. I'd probably swerve the FFRR just on image alone although they are a lovely car.
I've looked on internet at the A6 Allroad(thin on the ground) & V90 Cross Country sort of cars but the wife really doesn't like any of them. I'm not keen on the Q7 or the XC90.

The RRS is a great drive (and will feel much more like a fast road car than the D4 in comparison) but you'll miss the boot. The RRS boot is great in isolation but it's not the cave that the D4 is. But then, few things are as big as the D4's boot.
Not sure why the FFRR has an image problem for you. They are increasingly common on the roads these days and seem to be "just another SUV" in most eyes i.e. hated as a Chelsea Tractor just like every other big SUV (including the D4, of course).
Left-field suggestion: Skoda Kodiak
Example: £35,800 with c.8000 miles on the clock. 7 seats. Similar engine power to D4. Only tows 2000kg, however.

With small rims and tyres (255/55/20) and no added bling I find my L405 SDV8 FFRR looks quite reserved in comparison to many large SUV’s nowadays. Each to their own though.
It suits my needs well, but it’s not as versatile or practical as a D4, but then no new vehicle is. You just have to work out what you’re prepared to compromise on.

I have the same issue with my wife, just had to change out my D3 and would have gone back to a FFRR but I was told it was not an option as we don't want to look like drug dealers!!
Still happy with my new D4 just wish I was driving it

I am in the same position with my 2014 D4 , and I have looked around at what I could replace it with and the answer seems to be nothing so I have decided that I will keep her until I have no option at all

The Skoda came to mind but Mrs wasn't keen. This is the difficulty replacing a D4 - not much compares.
I think we'll end up staying with the LR brand. Having LR staff in the family means I've driven them all apart from a 2018-2021 RRS. I've never warmed to the D5, I'm sure its fine to live with it just doesn't do anything really better than the D4 IMO. Just a shame i cant really afford the newer I6 engine family.
For sheer comfort, luxury & mile munching the FFRR wins on whats available for the money. I'm not too hung up on image myself(couldn't care less what folk think), but its the wife's daily so I'm considering her likes more than my own sometimes.
I think we need a drive in both the RRS & FFRR on the same day to make a decision.

Looked at the Kodiak when we considered a switch a while back . Nowhere near as big as the D4. Much smaller boot and rear seats don’t fold flat for loading up. If those things are important, as they are to us, then it’s a non starter.Gary

Audi no longer import the A6 Allroad to the UK as most seem to prefer the Q series.

With that budget…. I’d be sending my LR4 in for a complete and proper refurbishment.
But I’m like that.

From memory the GL was available with an off road pack. What I can’t remember is what it consists off. I doubt it was a popular option anyway.
I had one as a loan car via Enterprise and my LR Extended Warranty. There was nothing about it that was preferable to me than my L405. It did have 7 seats I think, but I no longer need that option.
As before, work out what features/spec you’re prepared to compromise on. For me a split tailgate and good off road capability where high on my lists of priorities. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
