D5/6-Who is the target market?

With both the new Defender and FFRR having the option of 7 seats, what is the target market for the Discovery now?

If you want a split tailgate (of sorts), which would exclude the Defender and want 7 seats, but specifically don’t want FFRR (image and cost?) then that’s it. Seems quite a niche market for a specific model. Especially as pricing for all three models overlapping.

Hardly seems worth developing a new/facelift D6!

Does the 7 seat FFRR have 7 x full adult size seats, with proper leg room etc?
I believed it was more 5 x Adults and 2 spotty youths max.

And the 7 seat Defender is of course significantly smaller in the load area department.

But you raise a really good question.
LR have spread their target market thinly over many different sizes and styles of models now, and perhaps they've gone too far.

They lost their way with the Discovery. The Defender is good but not as practical etc as the Discovery. If your a family then the Discovery is the better option.

The D6 needs the practicality of the D3/4 with a split tail gate and no stupid off set number plate!

Thumbs Up

So right - that would be perfect, especially with the option of a couple of petrol engines as well as diesel, EV & hybrid. Whistle

err…. the D3/4 has an offset number plate…. but then again, it’s not ‘stupid’. Very Happy

Well said ronp

I really can't understand the problem everyone appears to have with the D5 offset numberplate when the D1-4 had them.
I know the D1-4 is a square 2 line plate and the D5 a rectangular single line, but the prejudice has always seemed daft to me.

What’s needed is the option of a split tailgate for the Defender range. Surely a 110/130 with one would be at least as desirable as a D5/6?

Won’t be done of course due to having to find a place for a full sized spare.

The earlier models had offset number plates for practical reasons - rear mounted spare wheels earlier in the model's life, clever split tailgate design in the 3 and 4. The 5's offset number plate is a pure affectation. It serves no purpose and just looks silly, especially as the rear elevation of the vehicle is so big and bulbous.

Good point, I've never seen the rearmost seats in a new FFRR not IRL anyway, just photos.

Wouldn't the 7 seat 130 have a similar boot capacity to the D5?

Exactly, with the Freelander/DS, D4, RRS & FFRR LR had all bases covered. I also understand the role of the more luxurious "premium brand" Evoque & Velar.

However, since the new Defender 130 was announced, I'm struggling to see that the D5 will now serve much of a market.

Probably, but as neither the second or third row of seats fold completely flat it's pretty useless as a load lugger.

Mind you, I understand the D5 second row seats don't fold completely flat either.

From memory the D5 seats don't fold totally flat as per the D3/4 but they are not far off and go lower than the FFRR one do.

You can't help but think that the designers missed a trick there.

It also shows how very good the D3/4 design was. Sad

ETA: I have excluded the commercial models. Thumbs Up

Isn't the issue with the newer models simply down to the move away from a separate chassis? The L319 and L320 allow fold flat seats because the running gear and fuel tank are all down in the ladder frame, leaving a flat bottom for the passenger "tub". The rear seats are on frames that give scope to have a fold-flat arrangement where the newer ones have the rear seats bolted to the floor pan.

It's not impossible to get around, no doubt, but it's probably lower on the list of most buyers these days than things like USB / WiFi / RSE, etc.

^ I think your last sentence hits the nail on the head.

Which is a shame for the small minority, like many here, who do use their vehicles as a Land Rover was originally intended for.

You know this will never happen. It’ll be yet another round vehicle with a misaligned license plate at the back and an almost identical front to the RRS/FFRR/DS….
