Dab

Morning all
I've just picked up a d4 2011 (registered as a sdv6 however has the gear stick not the twisty knob) really clean bus looks to have been well looked after however I can't get any dab channels on the radio just says no reception and if I try to auto tune It dosent seem to do anything?
Is there anything worth looking for?
Or anyway of updating the system to the newer style? Or making the dab better?

Regards
Dan

Forget it is my advice, DAB in a moving vehicle is nearly as useless as the tv Laughing every time you go past a high building or vehicle you will lose reception. For example I can get Radio Lincs FM in a 100 mile radius of Lincoln, Radio Lincs DAB 10 mile radius providing I’m not behind a high building, tree or high sided vehicle and even then it’s no different to FM.

I suppose it depends where you are located but you will still lose it in a city.

My latest D4 also had that problem. The DAB receiver or antenna amplifier or whatever it's called is behind the panel in the boot on the driver's side. Up near the top I think. I opened up that area on mine, and either power to the DAB box or the antenna was disconnected. Plugged everything back in and DAB has been working perfectly ever since.
I love DAB! More reliable and generally better sound quality than FM
 D1 300Tdi - gone
D2 Td5 ES (Alive remapped...mmm) - sadly gone
D4 2012 SDV6 XS - Stolen

With a 2011 car, I think I'm right in saying it'll have DAB rather than DAB+. Which means you won't get too many stations anyway. If you are delving into it, it might be worth doing a search on here, I'm sure I've seen a thread where someone went about upgrading to DAB+. Could be worth considering.

Just had this problem on my 2016, took it to LR and they fixed it with a 'software update' - this seems to be their response to a lot of issues so i'll take that with a pinch of salt but it was done under warranty and now works fine again so i'm happy.

That is bad news for me, I can get Lincs FM loud and clear from Yorkshire to Derbyshire, DAB is iffy everywhere even on my Bose system at home with an extended arial I have sometimes to swap back to fm.
I live midway between Nottingham and Lincoln and have to swap the channel on DAB depending on which direction I’m going, or forget it and go to fm.
There’s one thing for sure their takings from the daily phone in competition(make me a winner) will be down. Whistle

Edit: spelling corrected, links FM. Embarassed

Nowt wrong with DAB, yes you might lose the signal for a brief period in certain places (10 or 20 secs), but I use an add on DAB receiver with a simple stick on screen aerial, and it's brilliant.

Before blaming the concept of DAB, look at the system you have, it could need a simple repair or upgrade.

I've found DAB to be totally lacking in any quality. Most use a very low bit rate, and this can be heard if you regularly listen to any BBC on FM which is notably better.
Where the DAB concept is good, it's low quality due to limited bandwidth means that it is mediocre at best.
Google DAB sound quality to see the numbers. It's a no go in the HiFi world where most stream their Radio.
Radio Paradise, available online, is a high bitrate and good quality free service.
I'm a Planet Rock and Absolute Radio fan, but sadly it just doesn't cut it on the D4 Harmon Kardon setup. It's wasted.

In the probably nearly 20 cars I've had DAB in, including the D4 the DAB has always worked really well. It's not the car, it's location. If you're in a poor signal area then it will be poor, but in truth thats few places these days.

I regularly drive across the country, and apart from a couple of minor spots on the M4 I can't think of anywhere else I get DAB drop out.

And for those dismissing the low bit rate (128kbps), a lot of people are streaming their music at similar rates these days. Personally, at home I wouldn't, but in the D4, it makes next to no difference.

Certain DAB channels like Smooth, Magic, Radio One are ok-ish but Lincs FM which was my favourite channel is rubbish on all three ensembles, initially I thought it was the car radio at fault but it is just the same on my home radios including a Bose with an extended Ariel, when Lincs FM was transmitted on FM frequency I could receive it perfect throughout the Midlands I could also receive Lincs FM good on DAB some days but not a every day, but now they have gone DAB only reception is very poor and inconsistent to the degree I don’t bother with it.
I can only comment on the DAB in my MY14 D4 whilst traveling.
