Almost $2 a litre in Perth for Diesel.

We are at $1.89 in Perth today for diesel. I said in this post we'd be paying $2 by Christmas. Rubbish. It will be $2 here within three weeks...... Evil or Very Mad

Oh and the gap between Petrol and Diesel is widening - Petrol was 33c cheaper.

I thought (though probably wrongly) that diesel actually cost more to refine now. I think that diesel is actually cheaper to refine - however a lack of refining capacity for diesel is forcing the price up

I was told, only last week, that at one stage they used to sell the Bass Strait crude, without refining, straight to service stations as it was so good quality!
Interestingly, I was also told, that Australia producers 75% of it's own crude oil requirements and so does NOT rely greatly on overseas imports. BUT in order to compete in the world market has to adjust it's domestic price in line with international markets!? If that is so then how can a country like the USA have so much cheaper fuel when they import more than we do? Is it really the effect of bulk purchase?

Most we paid while away was 1.90 at Cameron Corner - didn't seem that bad give n we're 1.80 in Melbourne now... Yes, the gap is widening - I reckong they're cashing in on the fact that there are more and more diesel drivers around now, and they're reclaiming some of their profits.

grrrr!

At the current prices, I'd have to keep my D3 V8 for 36.8 years to consume my savings in purchase cost in fuel costs. Makes my decision look better than it was intended to be. For those interested, diesel fuel USED TO BE CHEAPER for refiners to make than petrol did. That was because the refiners effectively dumped all the cr@ap in crude oil into the diesel fuel and heavy heating oil blend (remember how old diesel used to stink and look ultra-dirty). To make the current spec diesel fuel with around 20 ppm Sulphur in it costs more. In addition, particularly in WA, diesel demand at mine sites has skyrocketed and we import the stuff from Singapore by the tanker ship load. Both of these lead to higher prices. Once refiners spend a motza and modify their refineries to make more diesel fuel at the current spec, then I suspect the price differentials will decrease to close to nill. Remember that diesel fuel contains about 20% more energy/litre than does petrol, so in a "perfect market" it should sell for about 20% more.

At Easter I bought 170 litres at $1.95/litre (or $331 in fuel in one gulp) on the Nullabor (Balladonia) , so I can't feel too smug about my V8's good fuel habits.

Jim, what fuel "economy" do you get in the V8? I thought long and hard about V8 versus diesel and def would have gone V8 if I had bought new - as I bought 2nd hand I dont think the price difference between the two was as bad as new (yes? Neutral ). It does seem crazy that we are better off buying the model (V8 not diesel -assuming you want Big Torque) that consumes more "precious" fuel - because petrol is cheaper!! Confused

Just out of interest, I just read my latest Auto club magazine and it had an article on Diesel.
It makes the following points

• The rise in Diesel is a world wide phenomenon largely attributed to the booming economies of Asia, in particular China and India
• Diesel if the main fuel of Asia
• Australia has a booming economy in particular Transport and Mining
• The terminal gate price for diesel is based on the refinery price out of Singapore
• Singapore prices are expected to remain high for the medium term
• 99% of diesel sold in Australia goes to big customers on a contract basis, such as Mining, road and rail transporters
• Private motorist account for less than 5% of diesel sales as opposed to 70% of petrol sales, giving private diesel motorists little ability to influence the price of diesel

So basically with most diesel sales sold on contract to large consumers, the balance is not really that important to the oil companies to move, and hence it is not discounted as petrol is, like the weekly petrol cycle.
Trust me, what could go wrong?
