Diesel: Are we being ripped off

Filled up today and diesel had hit 1.55c/lt, and petrol was 1.30c/lt. (I am sure diesel was only 1.30c/lt about 8 weeks ago)

I know it’s Xmas holidays but what are others paying at the moment, and is there a 25 c/lt difference between diesel and petrol? in your part of Oz
Trust me, what could go wrong?

The reason I bought a diesel is because I was sick of my gas guzzling v8 and diesel was about .20 less than petrol at tme of ordering. Ever since I took delivery I too have noticed the price rise well above petrol - I'm feeling very ripped off. Maybe it's my fault! - I just can't win

And Diesel costs less to refine! Yes with diesel, we are getting ripped off, huge profits made by the "petrol" companies. Ah well, wadayado. Sad

Agreed - the petrol companies are making huge profits - undeniable!

However, I think you'll find that they only make pennies on each litre sold at the pumps - the Government take the largest cut by far (Well at least they do in the UK).

(I do work in the Oil & Gas industry but for a contractor at the 'upstream' end. We regularly get screwed by the Oil Companies - I have no sympathies for them)

Mudgee today:
Diesel 154.9c and Unleaded 144.9c.
All a rip off - they are charging up to 10c per litre to deliver this stuff 300km.

It's the differential between petrol and diesel that gat's me.
We had a 'petrol' price enquiry in NSW recently.
Yes it was only for unleaded petrol (not diesel, not premium unleaded) Twisted Evil

10 cents extra a litre for 98 octane annoys the Hell out of me Evil or Very Mad
I noticed that it's 8 Pence more in the UK (20 Cents) and since the fuel
duty is on the volume -- only VAT(GST) is on the price -- Poms are
really being stiffed.

Hi all, am new to this forum, (I'm from the dark side - RRS forum) but enjoy your site just as much, if not more. More informative!
PBob, we definitely are being ripped off for a product that, apparently, is cheaper to produce, but the price in Sydney is similar to Mudgee - $1.53.9 last week at Kensington, near Randwick Race Course. What can we do? We need an enquiry similar to the unleaded one. That found nothing except that consumers know when to fill up - Tuesdays, it's cheaper on that day - GO FIGURE???? What an answer! Bow down Bow down

Neil, not so much poorer, but more adventurous and out there!
To be honest the D3 didn't appeal at first, but now the shape has really grown on me.

Back to the subject at hand...

the ACCC really does have a lot of explaining to do!

Diesel IS cheaper to manufacture.

Diesel IS used in large volume - due to our Censored rail system which ensures all out goods are shiped to our shops in diesel trucks. Then we commute on diesel buses, take long distance trips on diesel trains, etc.

Diesel in Australia is now up to third world standards... in 2009, we should be at EU standards.

It seems to me petrol manufacturers are gouging us... no two ways about it...

Off to the ACCC and new govt web sites to complain.

Cheers,
Rob

I thought (though probably wrongly) that diesel actually cost more to refine now. Originally it was cheaper because of the type of oil used but with the type of oil being obtained nowadays and the higher standards required from diesel it is now a bit more expensive to produce. Irrelevant really though as the major cost to the consumer for either fuel is the extortionate taxes added on by governments Evil or Very Mad

Just returned from a quick work trip to the US and they have the same price difference in petrol (3.80 p/gallon)and diesel (4.20p/gallon)prices, as we have here. This is roughly Au$1.00 p/litre for petrol, the poor Censored were going off their heads about paying this price.

I can’t believe how cheap things are in the US, You can buy a 2 yr old Range Rover HSE for the equivalent of Au$45000.

Ps I would love to be paying the fuel prices, that where available at the start of this thread, I haven’t been game to check out the Diesel prices here yet
Trust me, what could go wrong?
