I had the 4cyl diesel disco sport as a courtesy car. Granted it was the old engine buy the fact still stands the car was brand new and an 11 year old disco is smoother to drive, so is a 500 quid 18 year old 200k mile straight six bmw 525tds for that matter.

The "best",and smoothest engine I've had in any car I've owned is easily the 3l straight-six petrol in the X5....absolute belter, and it was sometimes hard to tell if the engine was running it was so quiet....and this is nearly 20 years ago.....
The 2.9l VR6 VW engine was very good also, but had more vibration at idle....
Straight six for me every time please Land Rover "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Similar but mine was the 3.0 straight six diesel in a 2001 BMW 530d Touring. 190bhp of loveliness and I got it secondhand with about 85k on the clock!!!!Front Runner Rack, OEM Ladder & RAI, Tuff-Trek Foxwing, B'rakhah Ingonyama Expedition Trailer, RLD's Spare Wheel Protector, Bodsy's Bars, Empty Pockets! I saw an article from the states that said straight sixes are due to make a big comeback. Imagine if LR got their finger out and made a 3.0 straight six tri-turbo like the BMW 50d engine. ..now that would be a weapon3 Flash Indicators

No reason why they can't boost the engine with an electric motor a la hybrid.
Unbelievable torque when you need it, economy when you don't, max horse power when you need it, smooth refined and quiet engine when you don't.
Personally I like an engine that purrs and 4 cylinders have never done that for me.
The time for the petrol, hybrid D5 is here.... let's just hope it has a straight 6 MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)
Prospeed rock/tree sliders w/steps
HSE Winter wheels
TransK9 B24
Travall Cargo Guard
Hatchbag
Doubt it will, the hybrids seems to be mating cheapo crappy petrols to the electric / battery systems. Not nice. I had an Audi A8 hybrid as a loaner a few months ago, useless bloody thing. Did 25 mpg and sounded like a focus.____

I wonder if, with the increasing lack of enthusiasm for diesel amongst the powers that be, how about a decent petrol engine for the D5? They already offer a supercharged V6 in the RRS in non-diesel markets. 300+bhp in a Disco...Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

The much talked about D5 Mule (allegedly) has, according to the DVLA, a petrol engine. Any ideas on what that might be?Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

It's the only one available here on a D4 and apparently it works quite well. Also used in the Jags, like the XE S we saw yesturday at the dealership. The shop manager said it's quite impressive on a track too http://www.gap-diagnostic.com/
