Not sure if this is old news though.

My folks are dithering between a new D4 & D5 and I am constantly reminding them not to believe a word the dealer says re the latter. In the information vacuum that exists re the D5 they will be making it us as they go along. Like we do. Though we are probably better informed. Whistle

I showed him the spy shots on the D5 forum on my phone he was oooooh not seen those before Laughing

The carry on on here around the D5 reminds me of the iPhone antics on the forums with spy shots etc, i'm as guilty as ever because its exciting to me but it is funny. Laughing

Sixth order vibrations....

Straight six engines....petrol or diesel are inherently smother than straight 4, V6 & some V8's

Plan is for V6 not straight six in the first production vehicles.
Anyway most engineers think that as nice and smooth a straight six is, they are too long and not as compact as a V6.

The logic is that the reciprocating cylinders in a straight six engine balance themselves naturally...the maths is complex (sixth order vibrations)...in practice they are smooth

Straight fours don't have the two missing cylinders so aren't as stable mass balance wise...some makers have added banner shafts in addition to the usual crankshaft balancing weights ...... better bu not as smooth as a straight six.

V8 engines (usually 90 degrees between the centre lines of the cylinder banks) are in the same order of mass balancing as a straight six...very nearly.
V6 engines (usually 60 degrees between cylinder bank centre lines) aren't as smooth vibration wise as a straight six or V8....

There have been some 90 degree V6's....the Puegeot / Renault / Volvo (B28) "Douvrin" engine....2.6 to 2.8 litres was a 90 degree V6.... Made on transfer lines for a larger V8 engine (never made)...
This engine wasn't smooth at all....it went into the DeLorean, Citroens & a small number of Lancia Themas....Lancia being the innovator if the vee engine sorted it with Pistons with off centre gudgeons...& more....brilliant engine - I managed to adapt one from a crashed Thema into a Volvo 760....

SAAB under GM made a six cylinder straight Vee 2.5 litre petrol engine for the 900 & subsequently as a 3.0 litre for the 95.

The straight vee has I believe 10.5 or 15 or more degrees between the banks so you get six cylinders in a very narrow & short engine block.....I had one of these in a SAAB 900 in NewZealand .....all I can say in stunningly smooth & very very powerful.....same engine I believe also got to the Vauxhall Vectra, Opel & Holden models.
VW also did VR6 & VR5 cylinder engine with the straight vee configuration......10.5 or 15 degrees

Straight sixes always will be smoother than a vee...I just hope J/LR do one
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

I've been feeding my salesman info from all the spy shots on here as they get nothing from LR until last minute.
