European Breakdown cover for Caravan

Hi all,

Who does everyone use for EU Cover (France) with Caravan. I have LRA for car really and Mayfair for caravan in the UK

Heading over for 12 days and contacted Red Pennent who quoted £112.00 for Car and Caravan, Cant do caravan alone Crying or Very sad

Spoke with RAC and they cant do a short term due to caravan length but can do a year with breakdown etc at £139.98

Anyone else worth trying?

Umm, dumb question as new to caravanning.

I assume my AA cover will cover my caravan as well as my car while I am in the UK?

Yes but only of you if are towing it at the time of the breakdown/incident and I am not sure if you are covered if its the caravan that has the problem. We will be changing to a specialist cover in the near future.

Not always, if in the caravan club get mayday cover (green flag) and if you're in the camping and caravanning club get arrival(RAC) not a dumb question-plenty have been caught out.

As previously mentioned some breakdown policies will only provide recovery of a caravan/trailer if it is the towing vehicle which suffers the breakdown.

Voyager insurance provide recovery of a broken down caravan/trailer (providing you pay the caravan/trailer suppliment)

You also need to check what length of van the AA will recover as standard. A lot seem to have a limit of 7.6m

Above that you need a cover such as Red Pennant or Arrivals

Strangely AA only have a 3'5 ton weight and 7'6" width restriction, no mention of length.

I used the C&CC version as was cheaper then red pennant but didn't lose out on anything I thought worthwhile.

Hi all,

I did one last google search before heading with Red Pennent and found the below company.

Anyone used them before?

Having a quick look at that link, it's like the majority of breakdown policies. They will only deal with the caravan if it's at the side of the road, and not if you have a problem off road (at a camp site), unless I've missed something.

Red Pennant isn't cheap, but you do seemingly get what you pay for. Three years ago we were in France, and noticed a rather expensive motorhome parked up, and its occupants staying in one of the site's mobile homes. Chatting to the owners, they told us that they'd been struck by a thunderbolt (which had put a nice hole in the roof!) and that all the electrics had been knocked out, including the Fiat/Peugeot ECU, so the vehicle wouldn't go anywhere. They had AA cover (or so they thought), but because it was an "act of God", the AA didn't want to know. To cut a long story very short, they had to get the thing brought back to the UK (initially at their expense) and sort it out through their vehicle insurance. Believe it or not, that was cheaper than having it transported to the nearest Peugeot dealer who would touch it as it was a motorhome. It was a real mess. By chance, reps from the Caravan Club happened to be on site whilst all this was going on, and they contacted HQ (Red Pennant) and relayed the story. Their response was that they would have been fully covered under Red Pennant (and would have been provided with alternative accommodation and vehicle to continue their holiday).

Since then, it's been Red pennant for me every time, despite having top notch breakdown cover on the car which covers the caravan whilst it's being towed.
