Fitting an awning to a D3/D4 without a roof rack?
So after a rather successful Easter weekend camping in Wales with the new D4

The missus suggested we improve our setup somewhat
Now I'm not talking full overland prep with roof tent etc as we're still a few years away from those kind of investments but I am keen on looking at windbreak and awning options.
I've been through various threads using the search function and seen a number of options but you all seem to be running rather pricey expedition racks etc which I'm not keen on just yet.
On campers it's common that they bolt awnings to the bodywork and that's not something I fancy doing to a 14MY D4 wi less than 400 miles on the clock. So....
The engineer in me says the roof rails (I mean the std HSE fitment north south rail not the cross bar) would make an ideal mount for a basic pull out awning 8)
So question is, has anyone on here done this, or know of someone that has? And if so, anyone know of somewhere I could buy suitable fixings?
Secondly I'm thinking of one of the direct4x4 awnings on eBay (£165 if memory serves me right) does anyone have an experience of these?
Mike

The Thule roof bar feet that can be bought separately may make a good starting point for some brackets to fit the roof rails?Darren

These both come with an L Shaped bracket which works with ANY roof rack / Bar System (and you need a minimum of 2 x bars with this system), also there is a special bracket for a Front Runner Roofrack here
This has straps and clips, so as long as you have factory rails / roof bars or a roof rack you can mount, side, back, whatever as you can move it....OR you can carry it in back the car and just erect free standing
Hope that helps?300TDI Toy... Now gone

Hi Ben
The FR Racks quite cheap..
£591 INC VAT at UK Prices (from likes John Craddocks) this is a 3/4 sized
rack, the full is KRLD023T
I'd be wary, doesn't take a lot of a breeze to make an awing shift, only three fixing points to the mainly plastic rails, how would you support the end of the awning at the front?
I used to have a Howling Moon 2.4 bolted to the side of a Frontrunner rack, Foxwing (currently undergoing major surgery due to very light breeze) side mounted to Prospeed is current set up.Paul.

You can get side panels and it will tie on to the rear roof bar, which can be used as an anchor point or it can also be left free standing so you can pop off in your vechicle without having to dismantle it allD4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

Thanks for that, ended up going for something similar but a bit more basic and a whole lot cheaper!
