Fitting new head unit - harness problems

I'm trying to fit a new head unit in place of the LR one but can't seem to find a harness that works. I have tried one from Halfords (completely different plug!) and one from online (physically fits but unit dead) and one from an audio specialist (same issue).

The LR head unit worked fine and the new unit works fine as I tried it in another vehicle. The harness needed is LR to ISO but seem there is an issue with the orientation of the leads.

Anyone tried a lead that worked? Where did you get it?

You can try these guys. We used them before on an RRS and got the just what we needed.

Follow the red and yellow wires from the adaptor back to the LR plug.

You will probably find one of them (ignitiion) isn't connected to anything on the LR loom.

If you connect this to the cigar lighter + wire it should sort it

What are you replacing ?, the connects2 loom works well and gives you ISO plugs at the end.

What head unit are you replacing? As if its a Premium or logic 7 with an amp under the drivers seat you will have problems.

All the speaker wires connect to the amp under the seat not the head unit, the head unit then communicates with the amp via the fibre optics system. If you want to replace the head unit you need a special loom kit thats quite expensive.

Hi Gents its just the standard unit, no amps to worry about. I think Pete K was on the right lines, the red lead on the adaptor harness (on both I bought!) goes to a blank pin on the car harness. Just need to take a bit more of the dash apart and provide a feed when I get a mo'

You shouldn't need to add any wiring the loom should fit and work.
I had the base CD400 and put an android head unit in using the connects2 harness and fascia kit, all just plug and play.

This exactly, I has the exact same issue with a pioneer unit, just took a simple feed from the cigarette lighter and it worked Thumbs Up

Indeed you would think that would be the case. I didn't know about 'Connects 2' I foolishly thought a car audio specialist or Halfords might supply one that worked, the Disco is not exactly a rare and unusual beast. I imagine someone somewhere got it wrong and China started copying it.

Thanks Fuzzy it is indeed, the problem. Good excuse to wire in some USB ports too.

Well it's a combination of LR not supplying an ignition wire
and aftermarket kits assuming there is one, (rather than providing a long wire to run to the cigar lighter connector)

Just an update for anyone reading this is 2 years time hoping to scroll to the end and find an answer...

The vaunted 'Connects2' harness didn't work - same problem as the others in that there is no Accessory feed to it from the LR harness.

Maybe on later D3's LR added one? (Mine has the earlier grey fascia not the black as in pics above).

Anyway, easy fix once you know, thanks to PeteK and MuckyDuck for the pointers. Run an accessory feed from the Cigar Lighter sockets below and off you go.

Hi,

I am unfortunately a bit confused with all the posts about updating the radio system. I have a 2008 D3 SE with HK System with 6 CD changer. I would like to keep the top screen with offroad information etc.

Is it possible to get rid of the old radio, install a nice double DIN radio instead and still run the top screen with the offroad information? And will the buttons on the steering wheel still work? And if the answer to all this is yes, what wiring loom do I Need? And is it possible to do for a complete in-car-electronic-idiot like I am?

Many thanks!!

Best

Maxime
