Fitting a roof box to a D4 - Confused!!

I have the old roof box from my D2, there are no crossbars with it and would like to fit it to my D4 for the first time for an upcoming trip. I've had a look at what I might need but frankley there is a lot of confusing (to me - LOL) info out there. At the moment I just have some plastic strips down the roof ( as pic) so guys what do I need to attach the roof box - nothing fancy as it's just for the one trip?

Looks like you need roof rails.

Hi,

As mentioned you will firstly need roof rails as well as roof bars. The black trim in your picture is removed and then the rails are fitted in their place, the roof bars then connect into the rails.

I would look in the sale items here and on the DB groups as they do come up used, but you can also get them new from Ebay.

Hope that helps.

Rails on here, don't know if they're still available. These are the short rails basically run from back to where the roof drops.

These are new ones but they're the longer ones that run front to back

These are the roof bars that the box would actually mount onto. Used genuine ones usually go for about £80.

Update.

I ended up getting aftermarket rails and bars which maybe wasn't a great idea!

Fitting was easy apart from every plastic rivet holding the filler strip on the roof down snapped off. I didn't want to drill them out for fear of damaging the thread so ended up putting a heated torx driver into them which once cooled allowed the rivet to be "unscrewed". The threads were also rusted so after snapping the first screw I gave them a clean with a tap before they would accept the hold down screws. Job ended up taking more than half a day !!

I am not completely happy with the fit of the front plastic cowling piece which has a gap at it's front edge. This looks like it could catch the air and pull off at motorway speeds.

Also the bars came with no keys so have to go back, the supplier has no more stock so I'm frantically trying to get some roof bars before this Sunday.

Lift off a cap and drill a small hole through the front of the plastic footing and through the alu roof trim, screw in a self tapper, put the cap back on an the gap should at least be smaller.

btw, it's quite normal for bolts to seize or snap if rails hadn't been fitted before, if the holes haven't been tapped out.
Unfortunately like most of us [myself included] you've learned the hard way by seizing or snapping a bolt.

The experience of myself and others on here is the aftermarket kits only differ from genuine in the quality of the plastic ends.

Oh, and £400 in price. Laughing

Fitted on a warm day, they're usually good enough. But how often do we get those? Whistle

Also I seem to recall using Sikaflex under mine when I fitted them, fills in any gaps as well as fixing them down !

Further Update

Thanks to Halfords first class - and free - delivery service my Thule roof bars order arrived on time Saturday morning and I was able to fit the bars and roof box ready for our Sunday ferry. Must say when I first saw all the the bits for the roof bars I thought "oh crumbs"! but it ended up being straight forward in the end.

p.s I applied a bit of black silicon under the insecure looking plastic caps at the front of the roof rails and they were still there after 130KPH on the French autoroutes!
