If you knew anything about our military you know we do not buy what others insist on we buy - we are quite capable of making our own stuff ups as per the French subs.
The only thing that is a given is the nuclear propulsion unit - everything else is up for grabs - who knows we might even end up with the French hulls with the US propulsion unit.
The Collins class submarine was a great unit for its time but 30 years on is getting a little tired but still performs admirably - still quieter than any nuclear submarine and once sorted have worked well for us. In an attack role, one on one, it always detected and took out the nuc first. If the search took a while then the limitation of a diesel came into play.
When diesel was the only option we should have gone the Japanese sub - arguably the best conventional sub around.

Collins was good once it was sorted out. It wasn't quiet to begin with.
I wonder if the AUKUS deal will see Australia buying Rolls Royce's PWR3 reactors that have been developed for the UK's new Dreadnought class SSBN. US fuel, UK reactor (US initial design but developed using RR's technology), hull from whom? Sensor suite presumably the best they can buy from whomever.

The one thing we do know is that the new submarine will have the the S9G sealed for life reactor (sounds like a D3 gearbox) currently used in the Virginia class submarine.
I guess the other thing is know is it is going to cost a lot more than the French Submarines even after the ripoff price of the French. Also numbers will be less 12 vs 8 for the nucs.

Presently reading “1000 years of annoying the French” by Stephen Clarke. This latest spat would indicate it needs to have an update. If he reads this which I doubt as a historian I guess his grasp of British history is somewhat limited. There were no kings or queens of England after James the VI of Scotland became James the 1st of the united kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Feel better now it’s been a frustrating few days. Sorry about that Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.
