The Russians want to go back to the Cold War when they were feared by the West. Sadly for them, things have moved on since then. Having said that, their kit is interesting and pretty scary - hypersonic missiles and nuclear tipped torpedoes are a good answer to the West's "we've got great destroyers to protect our carriers, etc.". Taking out a hypersonic missile is no easy task. And if it gets through and hits a ship, even a carrier, it's going to do massive damage even if the warhead doesn't explode. A 1 tonne missile travelling at "silly mph" carries enough kinetic energy to behave like a half tonne of TNT.
And the nuclear torpedo means you don't even need to hit the carrier - just detonate the nuke 100m below the boat and you sink said carrier.
This is a 4.8kt device 20m below the surface. A destroyer that was within 300m of the detonation was sunk, other stuff wasn't. But make it a 2Mt device, as suggested for the new nuclear drone torpedo, and you'd sink a carrier that was nearby.

How many lives shattered. How much blood will spill, until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning: SIT DOWN AND TALK!"

If it ever gets to the stage of the main players throwing nukes at each other I've always assumed in my lifetime that no matter who has the better trainset we'll all be wiped out anyway. Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Most people assume all sane nuclear weapon capable nations would want to keep conflicts conventional instead of escalating it. The step up from nuking a carrier group is to start lobbing stuff against valid military targets and turning them into gleaming, glassy and slightly windy parking spaces. It won’t end well for the players nor the spectators.
Americans had an howitzer back in the 50s/60s for battlefield use. Seems like one “well it was a good idea at the time” but they killed it off.
As you say, hypersonic missiles are “much” more interesting since it keeps things still conventional. They do massive damage on impact just because of the amount of energy involved. Interception is difficult because of the speeds involved. Railguns would be another conventional weapon system with massive energy. I think they’re mostly R&D still. Era of capital ships is probably also way past.
Anyway, maybe defense to hypersonic kit on US side won’t be the good old SM missile family or a slug based CIWS system? Perhaps it’ll eventually be laser based.
