Let's face it, any country would be extremely annoyed if a major deal such as the France / Australia sub deal was, ahem, torpedoed by some of their own allies.
Would the UK be saying "oh well, never mind, I'm sure it's a better deal for the Australians" if the boot was on the other foot? I think not. Well, if it was the Yanks shafting us, HMG would probably say how brilliant it all is and how it's a sign of the "special relationship" at work... Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

And even then we still talked about buying F111 instead of TSR2. Good bless the special relationship, eh? Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

What did France expect when in 2.5 years the price went up from $60b to $90b and the time frame blew out by 10 years - and this is before any actual construction work had commenced. The contract had exits for price increases and time delays and the contract was at the first major exit point. The French were trying to take us for a ride, they knew it and we knew it so there should have been no surprise to the French that the contract was likely to be cancelled.
The cancellation was a good decision - we should have gone the Japanese offer which was a better submarine. At this stage we are unsure what we will get but is unlikely to be UK based - the Brit submission for the Attack contract was rejected - basically the same as the French - a nuclear sub with diesel electric machinery.
The change to nuclear propulsion is neither here nor there for the weapons capability will be much the same as the Attack Class. Advantage in nuclear will be flexibility in tasking.

If the Yanks are in on it, it'll be a Yank sub either built by them or licenced to be built in Aussie docks. The UK bit of the deal is probably going to be something minor like the handle for the head door. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

We wont get anything that important out of it, the head door handle is mission critical - no we will get the bog roll holder or the contract to supply the bog roll. In fact I think its being “handled” by the same robbing bar stewards who sourced the PPE for the NHS 2013 Baltic Blue D4 - a balance between family car and camping machine - trying to not bladder it with stuff I dont need!
2008 FLR2 - bit travelled and surprisingly good - exchanged for above
1967 S2a SWB - the old girl - current, original and much loved
1998 - Td5 overlander - much travelled and very much missed
1996 - 300Tdi 110 overlander - much travelled and much missed
1998 - FLR 1 td4 - my first Civvy Land Rover!

Actually, I hear the UK is being given the contract for the white paint that will be used on the outside of the subs... Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Yes, Hugh, but will the Yanks let us sell it to the Australians or will they insist on selling them their stuff instead?
The Astute subs are excellent bits of kit (when the driver in charge doesn't try to cut a corner and sit it on a sand bank in the dark, of course) and are said to be as good as any other attack sub in the world.
Is the deal to sell them some Astutes or is it to sell them some re-warmed US design with British kit bolted in the front? It's to be hoped that the Aussies don't end up with a mechano-kit sub that costs plenty but isn't as good as the sum of its parts. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk
