Security in Caen was tighter than we'd ever seen before, armed soldiers patrolling the port. I had to open the caravan twice for security checks (and they looked in all the lockers, wardrobe, bathroom, not just a quick peek inside the 'van). At portsmouth we were asked if the 'van had been locked during the crossing, and customs were opening some small van's, trailer tents. Customs guy said to me that they had seen some folks trying to get into the UK by getting aboard in one vehicle than swapping to another during the crossing, open roof vents on 'vans being the most popular access.

I'm currently in a hotel in Ashford with the family ready to cross to France via the tunnel in the morning. Anyone been yesterday or today and if so was it straightforward to check in etc?

I flew home from Bordeaux yesterday and security was poor. The terminal was in chaos and no one was in control. Not impressed at all.

we had no issues on the way out through Dover, it was coming back, where the French security were much more active.
