Not a bad idea. I have seen people run stoves all night in their tent, seemingly oblivious to the risk or that the manufacturers warn that they can only be used with tent doors open and that they should be fully extinguished well before bedtime.

Safe as long as you obey the principals

Use the correct fuel, deffo not charcoal
Ensure the kw output of the stove receives sufficient airflow from vents
Stove is pretty airtight and flue seals well so natural heat carries fumes upwards and away
CO and fire alarms installed at mid way heights in the tent (not too high as CO can stay low)
Fire extinguisher handy or bucket of h20
Knife handy to slash your way out quick just in case

I once used a small gas fire stove in my oztent which set the CO alarm off within 5 mins
I got a banging headache for hours afterwards but without the alarm would have been unaware of the danger

Be safe peeps

off topic but relevant to all you ice fest campers

After a bit of green eye envy spotting forum members kit at the weekend i bought a new Rab 900 ascent 4 seasons bag today ( to go with my recent purchase of Jesters mammut jura bag for slightly warmer trips Thumbs Up )

Go outdoors have them at £245

I showed them the cheapest same model in stock on the net price i could find at £229 and without quibble they matched the price and took 10% more off so £206 job done
Top bag and will last a looong time. Sick of feeling the cold, but now a thing of the past Thumbs Up

Interesting, as I read through this topic it was the first thing that came to mind.
CO poisoning these days is as likely from a poorly installed domestic wood burning stove as it is from a faulty gas boiler.

remember the kid that died in the tent because they took a disposable barbecue into their tent - I know the family of that girl's best friend, devastating for all concerned - I am extremely wary of any flame not out in the open

An interesting quote from the FAQ of Windy Smithys stoves. In light of this, I would definitely be fitting an alarm if I used any of the stoves discussed.

Windy Miller Smithy wrote:
Are Your Burners CE Marked? Do they have to be?
From July 2013, all Heating appliances to be fitted in houses under Building regulations Document J are required to be CE approved and marked as such.

Our stoves have not gone through the testing required for CE approval, but though the much more rigorous on site testing and approval of our thousands of happy customers.

So i am afraid that we will not be able to sell you a stove if you tell us that it is for fitting into a house.

Stoves fitted in Caravans, tents, vehicles , Shepherds huts etc. etc. etc. are not required to be CE approved, according to Gastec in Cheltenham who do the testing.

Please be aware that there are, or have been, many cheap stoves imported from abroad which bear a CE design on them, which can mean "China Export". I guess we could just put a sticker on that means "Cider Energy", but i don't think so.

Did they really say they use their customers as guinea pigs rather than formal testing?

Formal testing and CE Approval are two different things. I doubt if many or indeed any of the small stoves mentioned on these pages have the relevant CE Approval required from 2013.

Wild Stoves have a near identical warning for the Frontier:

http://wildstoves.co.uk/outdoor-heaters-cookers/frontier-stove/

I suspect the the cost is prohibitive for small manufacturers of stoves primarily used outside of the home.

As I said on my Scotland thread, my first outing of the frontier stove concluded that a good supply of kindling sized wood will keep it burning hot enough to cook on, and therefore provide a 'decent' slug of heat. I took a bag of 'home' wood that burns to powder in my lounge stove but (as del referenced) left me with charred chunks of wood in the frontier stove. Finally, I too suffer with surprising levels of sticky that in the flue.

I just don't think the frontier gets hot enough to get that all-consuming combustion of wood that will burn successfully in a home stove. But with humble sized fuel and lots of attention (I rake the embers constantly in mine to try and break it up as it burns) you can succeed in cooking and heating. It takes more effort than a higher-performing stove but hey, it's cheap as chips and you're sat there with a quality malt in hand in your oztent; what else are you going to do? Thumbs Up
