Gas bottle connection

OK, it's on a house in rural Italy but I figure caravan owners will know.

Two gas bottles, connected by this

Hot water died when gas in rh cylinder ran out and I've only been able to get boiler to reignite when I put a full bottle on rhs, on lh connection it doesn't want to know.

Is this just coincidence ( or impatience on my part ? ) or are these valves capable of failing in a one-sided way?

TIA

That doesn't appear to be a standard changeover mechanism - just a means of (theoretically) isolating one bottle at a time to a common feed for the regulator.

I'm assuming that the lh bottle valve is switched on and that you have opened the manifold (T-piece) valve on the lhs?

If so then I would suggest you close both valves, swap the lh bottle to rh and see if it will run off that. This should at least allow you to confirm whether it is a valve or gas issue.

That's what I did.

Having swapped to using lh connection, boiler wouldn't ignite.

Moved full bottle to rh connection and all worked.

Moved it back to lh and it failed again.

But moving it back to rh , it took several minutes to start working - maybe purging air ? - which is only reason I'm doubting my diagnosis.

FiL was not for calling the plumber out to it ... much like last year when he was adamant he hadn't stuck a hosepipe in the flue to get rid of a wasps nest and yet, amazingly, the gas valve was flooded with water. So, I suspect there's a factor here I'll never appreciate but if these things can fail onesidedly, it makes sense to just get a new one rather than cut his hands off to stop him fiddling. He did say he'd meant to swap bottles rather than let it run out but hadn't quite done it.

Hi,

have you tried swapping the pig tails (pipe from valve to cylinder) to see if there is a blockage in that.

Thumbs Up

That's a lot of pain for which I'll get no thanks.

Local regulations appear to say it has to be solid copper tubes ... the flexi ones got replaced a couple of years ago by a different plumber than did the original install.

Question.

If one hose is disconnected from a bottle but both valves are open does gas flow from the open hose?

Apart from the safety issue the reason why I ask is if not there must be some form of restrictor to stop the gas.

It could just be a shuttle to block the port but whatever it is it could be stuck.

I've put it on a list of things to look at next time I visit ... which won't be for a while.
Probably just fit a new proper one sourced near there and know it will work and meet regs.
