| Getting detachable towball in. |

Got a genuine LR towball on a well-known auction site. After much cussing (the manual really is useless for this), whacking it into place umpteen times and fiddling I couldn't get the thing in far enough to get it to push the pin in and lock in place.
I'd tested the little pin worked by tapping it with a wooden mallet and the shoot-bolt flies out, green handle whizzes round etc.
Realised that the towball wasn't going in far enough to press the pin in, so lacking engineers blue, I got some Snopake (other correction fluids are available) and applied that to the top and shoulders of the big towball insert, and down the sides, and pushed it in. Saw that the Snopake got worn off on the sides of the shoulders at the top and on the faces of the shallow lugs on the side. Tiny bit of filing, and at the next attempt and a repeat, success.

Silly question possibly, but assumint it was new, were the machined flanges painted, as I had teh same issue ages ago, and it was the coating of paint that was the cause 
Cleaned off the paint, and fitted first time  Never get mad - get even !!
06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k

They were, but they didn't seem to be geting worn by the attempts to fit it. The paint was very smooth though. Only a tiny bit of filing was needed, so you may be right.

It's getting it back in it's hidey hole that's the issue for me, now lives in a tool box in the boot Paul.

I've just sussed that. I just pull out the plastic ever so slightly and it drops into place. Watch your fingers though!
I think the smalll fuse holder in the little cubby hole is a bit vulnerable? Does anybody else think so? D3 - RRS - Now D4
