So, aside from the electronic problems with the '05's, which from what I hear are solved with some updates, is it safe to say that an updated '05 or '06 is pretty much problem free? I always hear that LR's are unreliable. What are the more common problems with the LR3's? What should I look for when buying a used one? I cannot justify the depreciation hit of a new one.

As long as you have a good dealer who understands the D3 and is willing to apply Technical Service Bulletin fixes to customers vehicle either automatically or at customer request, you should be fine with any model year build.
The latest builds obviously benefit from having all and any mods (hardware and software) done in the factory.
The dealer I use here is very good and apart from a few initial niggles (and thats all they were) I've been very happy with my D3.
You will always have the odd vehicle from any manufacturer that is a Friday afternoon job, but with the thousands they have now built and sold, I would not worry... as long as you have a good dealer !

Hi Ryan,
Bought my TDV6 HSE in March 06 and took delivery in July 06 (it was a June 06 build). Since then ive done 27K miles, towed with it, been offroad in mud deep water and not a single problem of concern. The small issues I have had
ie broken exhaust / spare wheel sheild (due to Salisbury weekend), air intake rubber mishaped and replacement bonnet catch were all replaced under warranty.
Software was also updated to the latest version at the 15K service.
Keep an eye on this site and you will be well informed.
I am currently thinking about buying another for my wife and wouldnt hesitate bying an 05 or 06 build
cheers

well guys, I got an 07 this weekend, and at $5000 off sticker, it helped offset the cost of the transformation it's getting next week:
kaymar rear bumper/tire carrier
ARB front bumper with xd9000 winch &2x hella black magic centered
hannibal rack from my discovery 2004 complete with awnings 7' side, D90 sized 50" over rear
(rack is custom mounted via yakima gutter tower at lower front roof area via factory mount holes)
adjustable arm/reach work lamps on rear corners
4x hella cateye mounted under front edge of rack
dual battery system, switchable for all systems
inverter/ "3prong" outlet at rear hatch right
12v always hot at rear
solar re-charging system via brunton "solar roll 14" for extended camp stays
2nd air compressor system and 2nd tank for tires, inflatable canoe, pnuematic etc. with line out chuck and gauge at rear hatch left.
dome lamp installed in plastic that then faces down with tailgate "roof" open
side ladder that allows easy climbing to rack top from side of vehicle (ladder folds and goes inside cargo box)
20" rrsport wheels for summer/city/work travel
18" lr3 rims with bfg AT unless the ones i have don't fit and i'll resort to nitto tg like everyone else
i plan to try 1/8" - 1/4" wheel spacers as the 285/50x20 on 9.5" rims are tight at inner control arm and bfg's may fit then too. i will update this test. 96 Disco I, 210,000 miles - still going strong

next season i'll have a mini sink installed similar to the vw camper vans really, i could though. how neat would that be. in fact, i saw some advertisement for a place in norway or denmark ? somewhere scandanavian that does camper conversions on the disco3 much like the westfalia vw camper. pop up sleeping loft and all. sweeeeeet 96 Disco I, 210,000 miles - still going strong

i'll start a progress gallery. hannibal rack custom install is on now - i say custom because it's the D2 rack dimension with my own yakima 3 cross bar x 6 tower support system. the rear awning just clears the door upswing nicely still allowing the ladder to be installed.
does anyone know if there are proper "hub centric" wheel spacers to allow wider/larger tires to go on this thing? the issue is rubbing in the usual place behind the top of the tire but this year, 2007, seems to be tighter back there. maybe the casting of parts is different but a tire/rim that worked on an 05 does not now work on the 07. they used to fit with just enough to roll clear and now they actually rub. 96 Disco I, 210,000 miles - still going strong
