When it gets cold very quickly and unexpectedly, the fuel companies have no time for adding anti-freeze additive, even in Europe.
As a prevention for diesel freezing (or rather the paraffin in it crystalising), in my lorries I used to add a max of 10 percent petrol to the diesel fuel. This will lower the crystalisation point a couple of degrees.
I am not sure what this will do to
- modern hi-rev diesel engines
- warranty on your car.
So I suppose you should only consider this as a very VERY last option.

Thanks guys . it seams as if it is just the fuel gelling at low temps that may be an issue. Any tips on survival in a cold eviroment?

Take a couple of candles with you.
Should you get stranded without heating, lighting 1 or 2 candles inside your car, combined with the heat you produce yourself, will keep the temperature at a level that you will be able to survive and they keep your hands warm when necessary. Remember to bring matches too
