Help - noise is unnerving me
my D3 is making me a bit jumpy.
Over the last few weeks it has taken to making some wierd noises.......
Symptons:
After running for an hour or so get occasional random "graunches". They come from underneath towards the rear and sound either like metal on metal or simlar to the HDC operating. Sound last for several seconds and is easily audible over a loud radio. Also since it started doing this I have been getting random suspension failure which clears on a restart.
There appears to be no pattern to it other than the length of time of veicle running being at least an hour. Noise happens at high speed, low speed, straight, corners, under braking, not under braking. Can't force it to do it or give suspension failure.
Nothing is visibly loose underneath, nothing seems to be getting unusually hot, no smells, smoke or anything. Car functions as it has always done. It is 3000 mile sout of service and I was told all bushes etc. were fine. Brakes were all replaced at service though.
Been living with it until this evening when one particuarly long spell of the noise was acommpagnied by very perceptible vibration through the car. Very similar to hydraulic knocking in pipes in sensation.
Help. Obviously trip to dealers in the morning but as they will of course find nothing wrong with it looking for some pointers please Could it be something with the air system?
Anything appreciatedas I am sitting here glaring at the car suspiciously at the moment end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

Have you checked the compressor, like take off the cover and visably check the pump....It could be a prob there, theres nowt else apart from wheel Bearings to check for symptoms like this.

Just to ask the bleedin obvious; when the noise happens the DSC light doesn't flash on the dash?Dr. Ian Malcolm:

haven't checked the compressor recently but it isn't making noise otherwise (beyond the normal)
Will check tomorrow....
wheel bearings, wheels are still cool after a run so assume they are OK?end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

be as obvious as you like
but unfortunately no, I am familiar with the DSC operation
Noise is unrelated to any dash lights. Suspension fails when noise isn't happening.....but the two started happening at the same time.............
Vehicle hasn't been used off road since service and is clean underneath end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

Can't help but feel that the hour of travel is important; does the rear diff feel hot after a run?
Can't imagine why thin oil would make that rattle tho, and can't imagine a low oil level waiting an hour to cause any symptom either.Dr. Ian Malcolm:

How do I tell?
All the wheels point the same way
DD, so cold wheels can also indicate knackered bearings? end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

I'm no expert but thoughts are rear diff or suspension post seal failure. Have you had the ECU fault codes read? Sorry Spotter but it's only a guess.Club Exped trailer

Erm, let me think how to describe this.... Grab hold of those rusty metal shafts between the diff and the rear wheels and see if there is any rotational play in the joints at the ends. P'Brake on and in neutral might be best for this.

If you feel the power dropping at the same time, it could be a faulty steering angle sensor, this is usually (but not always) accompanied by a flashing DSC indicator
unlikely to be suspension related, possibly a wheel speed sensor but this generally results in the ABS amber light being illuminated TBH only a diagnostic read of the DTC's will point to the root cause
