Justice is finally served

One of my many pet peeves is folks towing with no clue or regards to speed limits or lane rules. Pretty much every trip up and down the M5 will see one clown with a trailer in the outside lane doing at least 70 mph. This is quite often a sub 750kg camping trailer for which no instructions for use are provided on purchase or white van man with a compressor bouncing along behind because he can’t see it and has forgotten it’s there (same could be true for the camping trailer as usually the car towing it it full to the rafters and they can’t see out of the back window)

On today’s trip down to Devon with the caravan on the back we had 4 occurrences of this. First one was a silver D3 with raised air intake with Adria caravan on the back doing about 70 in the outside line past strensham services. The we had a couple of pick ups with car trailers do the same a bit further south, then the best one. By cribs causeway an Audi Q7 with a triple axle trailer loaded with a farm trailer with balloon tyres so that it was wider than the trailer came past me again at about 70 in the outside lane. Where’s plod when needed? Well this time he was right behind this muppet in an unmarked beemer and once past us on came the blues and twos and the Audi was pulled over.

Made my bloody day 👍

There’s been some chatter about towing on one of the Facebook groups recently and it’s clear almost nobody understands the law on towing!

Sarumlight, I’ve been trying to follow that, but had to give up when the name calling and lack of respect started to raise its ugly head.
The law isn’t straight forward and ignorance of it is no defence, but the professional towers all seemed to be hollier than though attitude towards everyone else and the chancers arguing back that my mates second cousins mother in laws dog got stopped and drove away all to the good.
Like my enforcement colleagues at work, there are only so many of them and the odds of getting stopped are always in the drivers favour

Here is an example of how not to tow. This happened this evening, at the next village to mine. Looks like a Defender towing a tracked vehicle of some sort! Shocked

Not sure that's in the trailer manual!

Bit of digging and that appears to be a Universal Carrier (aka Bren Gun Carrier) that recently had some new tracks fitted by a company called Vanguard.

And in one of those "woah, small world" moments, the owner of the carrier (and probably that Landy) is a friend of a mate of mine Shocked

I guess the common factor in most if not all is “speed” and that means too much for the load carried.

Whilst I agree that it is good to have some enforcement of the law regarding towing and trailers.
It does often amaze me what whizzes past usually faster than is legal in the wrong lane etc.
My trailer use is now a small single axle tipping trailer, with a gross weight of just under two tonnes if filled up.
What really annoys me is people hogging the centre lane and going slower than the trailer limit, who then continue doing so for miles, so you have no choice but to head back to the left lane and continue at their speed.
Then you have the ones who decide that as you are passing them they stick indicator on and start pulling out expecting you to go to the third lane, which you cannot. Usually one of the professional lorry drivers, I am bigger than you and you will move.

Most of my journeys are spent in the inside lane under the 60mph level and sharing the lane with the more sensible lorry operators.

Just over 3 t towed on an A-frame without any form of braking by a lighter vehicle? The tail is always going to wag the dog! I bet it lifted the rear end of the LR.

At the risk of being told "you should know " ...

I passed my driving test at 17 and still have my original green paper licence. I towed a trailer or 2 when 18-ish and rarely since, last being 20 years ago. it never occurred to me I might need to take a further test ... although from discussions on here I'm assuming I don't until I swap from paper licence?

If was going to do it again, I'd have simply had a practice in a quiet car-park for a bit before hitting the road in anger.

You'd think that modern cars would know when a trailer is attached and could limit the speed.

Interesting discussion. My feeling is that although I know the law, and hold the appropriate licence (B+E) that the speed limit legislation is outdated. I believe that applies whether towing or not. With either my old D3 or D4 you can tow 3.5 tonnes and not know it's on the back. It would be very safe towing at 70mph, rather than an arbitrary 60.

I do my very best to avoid lane 3, but if two HGVs are playing silly Censored with one going 0.2mph faster and overtaking over 10 miles, I have been known to use lane 3 for a quick overtake. I also do sometimes exceed both the towing speed limit when towing, and the normal speed limit when not - like most drivers. I'd much rather see no motorway limits and harsher penalties for accidents and careless driving.
