Knocking noise when I hit a speed bump, & suspension fau

for the last few weeks I've had a knocking/wrattling noise when i hit a bump/dip from the front wheels/steering column... not sure exactly.

today I set off to head north and the suspension fault light came on solid, saying it was now locked at 'normal height'.

any ideas? it's going in to the garage tomorrow for service anyway, but any tips for heads-ups I can give them - i'm usually so rubbish at describing problems.

thanks 8)

I took a D3 for a Test Drive today, and it had a knock from the front on speed bumps too (I was only going slow).

Okay, I'm not familiar with these vehicles (yet!), but this sounded to me like a wishbone bush on the NSF. The steering felt slightly vague too, so maybe it needed several new bushes. The car had a 2-week-old MOT cert.

The D3 is a big, heavy motor, and the suspension components take a fair old pounding, even if you do not venture off the beaten track. The noise you're hearing is probably similar - indicative of a bush starting to go somewhere on the front suspension ...

Mick

Have had identical problem and was eventually tracked down to the bush on the rear arm lower wishbone - if worn/loose then you can get a metal on metal thump noise.
Emer - how old is your car & has it had any bushes replaced previously? Wink

had the speed bump knocking noise.....(08.5MY).....understand there's an upgrade on track rod ends or ball joints to 35mm fitting. Not sure which as wasn't really listening when I took it in for some minor warranty work today cos I was looking at a D4 Big Cry

I'm sure a knowledgeable chap will be along soon

I reported an identical problem when my 07 XS went in for its 45k service a couple of weeks ago. I was told that the front suspension had been 're-bushed' and that this was a common problem. However, it didn't fully cure the problem so it went back again and the steering column was replaced. This time it seems to be OK.
I was taught to be cautious.

I had my front end bushes all replaced but now when off road I get noticable noises that seem like something is amiss with the steering column.
Is this another common fault?
Worth investigating?

Rich,

Is the noise with the 285mm wide tyres on? These tyres do tramline more readily and someone else out there may know if they may cause extra thumping noises.

No it's with either set of tyres over any sort of rough potholed roads or off road.
Sounds like something either worn/ broken in the Steering column.
No sounds on smooth roads.

Just heard that knocking noise over speed bumps is due to premature wear in bush(es) on front wishbone. Will be fixed under warranty so more details when I get him back tomorrow:thumbsup:

Bushes had collapsed so re-bushed both front wishbones under warranty.....no more knocks Mr. Green

So I have the same sort of knocking on mine. Ive put new drop links on and ARB bushes on (updated thicker ones). Got the car back today thinking all would be well. Nope, still got the knocking. Not sure if to try steering column or ball joints. It already had lower ball joint. Thinking of changing the top ball joint but some of you say it could be the bush on the rear of the lower wishbone. It does sound a little metal on metal. very lost as I want to cure it but I dont want to change everything for the hell of it.
What do you think?
