LR extended warranty vs Warrenty Direct
Background :
I have a 62 plate XS D4 which is coming to the end of its LR approved car warranty at the end of March.
During the warranty period the only issue I have used the policy for is 2 failed door locks which were replaced
The car will have 53k miles on at the end of March
I have been quoted £1185 by LR to extend the warranty which seems quite a significant amount given there is no wear and tear cover and the claim limit they are quoting is £3000
I have received a quote from WD for their extra care policy which I believe is the most comprehensive cover quoting me using a main dealer £842 for a one year policy , £1516 for 2 years and £2148 for 3 years. This 3 year quote equates to £716 pa which given the cost of most repairs seems a good deal especially as the claim limit is the value of the car and not a small £3000 !
My questions are as follows :
1 ) How easy is it to claim for repairs from WD and do they in general cover most repairs required on a D4 excluding the obvious wear and tear items
2) Should I sell the car ( unlikely ) before the 3 year period can I reclaim any amount outstanding or alternatively transfer it to the new owner
3) Any general observations on WD would be appreciated as I have never taken a warranty out before
I have previously owned a D3 so am familiar with issues with suspension pump, EGR valves, Handbrake mechanism , Wheel bearings etc with the discovery
Thanks in advance for any advice
Steve

WD does cover wear & tear, unlike LR ext warranty. Plus there is one policy higher, Luxury Care. Would be worth trying to get that cover.
Re LR warranty, do a search on crank failure and LR extended warranty (which isn't be actually LR but Car Care Plan) not covering it as it's a design fault.
I've got WD cover on the D4, had it on various D3s and if a valid claim always been reimbursed in a week or so of getting the claim in, now done via email. Simples.
Unused portion of the warranty can be transferred on sale.
Another vote for WD, never failed to honour validated claims.LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Thats truly shocking, ive read it in my landrover extended warranty not actually underwritten by LR and exactly as you describe does not cover manufacturing fault.
Waste of time best go else where someone with proper cover
I wouldn’t commit to WD just yet, let them keep calling you, need to get the bettermeant clause removed.

And "emissions & airbags" cover, that covers cracked inlet manifold. When I was haggling for extras (a&he, hifi, can't remember what else) they were £50 a year for each but as it was a 3 year deal I got them for £100 each. And make sure you get "no betterment" in there. As said.

Considering you car’s age and low mileage there’s no reason why LR should be quoting you for the policy with the £3,000 limitation (they do one without the limitation and your car should qualify).2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I have today taken out a 3 year warranty with WD at a cost of £580 per year with the betterment clause removed.
At that price I find it hard to believe that WD will make any money on the deal given this is at dealer labour rates and given the propensity of the Discovery to break !

Usually the option writer knows more about the underlying asset than the option holder, particularly if the writer does this for one asset class everyday. Insurance policies and options are fairly similar, with both you’re hedging (protecting) your asset (the car). You think the discoveries are prone to breaking based on forum/preconceptions/experience/etc. but they KNOW good or bad the vehicles really are - that (the risk) is baked into the price of your insurance.
Remember that in the end the house (or option writer or insurance company) always wins.

+1 for WD. Never had a claim rejected (even one which wasn't pre-approved) and am easily quids in on the cost of the warranty vs. repairs effected.

You managed to get it down by £136 per year from the original quote, was this hard haggling or a reduction in cover?
I've got all this to come in June and being a 15MY with approx 28000 miles on it come June I will be able to get the top cover, which I believe is what you got?
Do they specify a total mileage that can't be exceeded in those 3 years?
The 3 year cover does seem to provide the best value, I'm just not sure if I'll keep the D4 that long.Discovery 4 HSE

Mines just coming up to 3 years old so have been invited to take an extended LR warranty for a year. Rang the other day and asked about crank failure coverage. They confirmed as it's a known fault it wouldn't be covered.
I have also had an initial quote from WD for 3 years. I confirmed with them they would cover the crank and it less than twice the price of the LR warranty for 3 years.
Im
I'm on the verge of going for WD after a little haggling.
CheersGary

Just for a little balance, I had my one and only claim with WD rejected.
It was for a dead wheel bearing on a 3 year and 4 month old BMW MINI. I’d had cover from the day my BMW manufacturer’s warranty expired and it had been sold hard (as they always do) as including wear an tear.
It was rejected as being a “wear and tear item”. It took a pretty savage fight and a replay of their telephone call recordings, from when the policy was sold, before they eventually conceded - and this was for a claim of only £280 ish!
I’ve been nervous of giving them my money since then.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

On the other hand, I have had 2 engines paid for by WD, both relatively pain free claims. One was in excess of £16k...My D3 Build Thread

Red Mearle and I are the only two people in this forum who have been ripped off by WD, everyone else raves about them. So statistically at least you should be grand.D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten
