Yeah I did it and it was fine.
Like you I wanted to put an extra bar in the middle for support but it was fine with 2.

There is no need for the third cross bar, as there are built-in steel railings which support the tent. However, it is advised to use the crossbars of the same width as the tent, which is not the case of the original LR crossbars. I had to replace them with Thule.D3 LE James Cook, 2,7 TDV6 auto

Just one more thing - it would not be possible to add the third cross bar anyway, as the fixing points on the Maggiolina are way off the edges (limited to the extent of the built-in steel railings).D3 LE James Cook, 2,7 TDV6 auto

i have seen rhino bars on the standard roof rails for the magg's - 3 should only be needed for hardcore off roading apparently, but when getting 2 you may aswell get the 3rd
