Melting Steering Wheel

I just recieved my disco 3 back from its 36000 service today to be informed that my steering wheel had been replaced as it seemed to be melting.
This was something i complained about 6 mths ago and after taking photos and the dealer sending them away, came the verdict that it must have been caused by me having something nasty on my hands at some stage.

I thought that this was a little far fetched but as a printer I do have solvents on my hands sometimes.

But the cute service girl informed me she had 4 other d3's with the same problem and was replacing them as they came in. She also said that my air bag cover on the wheel was also changing shape and has ordered me anew one.

I can't believe my luck, good looking service girl and smart too.

This is an interesting thread because I have also reported the "sticky" steering wheel only last week which also seems to be "melting". Stickiness has occurred on the right hand side at the quarter past postion. The SRS steering cover also is a bit deformed at the top but I didn't report this since I think the whole wheel would get replaced.

My Service Team Manager ordered a replacement which will be fitted at my service.

So it maybe a common problem.

Stevo,

I reckon you've been running some dodgy UV varnishes and not washed up proper style, joking. But could agree that if you had some solvents running then it would wreck any plastics that it came in contact with.

Steering wheel, Australian spec, is leather. Corrected grain leather but leather all the same.

Yes, solvents are a problem. But the stickyness developed over about three weeks. The first indication that something was wrong was that the wheel was starting to lose its leather look and started to look smooth. over the next couple of weeks it gradually got worse.
I feel vidicated now that other D3's in this area have had the same problem.
Perhaps they can't take 65c heat, much like southerners and Englishmen.

65 deg C is enough to slow cook a roast. Humidity may have a part to play with the sticky steering wheel.
