Mrs Troll's V8

Thought it was about time I created a thread on our D3 V8, much like I do for my D2 on the D2 Boy's forum.

We bought our latest D3 V8 (our 2nd V8 we have owned) back in Jan 2022, while I was searching for a Freelander to replace our leased RR Evoque, I spotted a modified V8 at a dealers up north.

Anyway went to view it, looked ok, needed a few jobs (don't they all) and it was at a good price. On the test drive it leaked a bit of water which turned out to be the thermostat housing, so the garage replaced that for us before we collected it.

last MOT showed worn lower front arms so they were on the list to replace.

It's a Dec 2004 V8 SE with 159k on the clock finished in Buckingham blue (looks black).

    The mods included
    roof rack & ladder
STT Mud tyres 275/65x18 with lift rods
T-max split charge dual battery setup & rear power outlets connected to aux battery
    rock sliders
    Terrafirma under body protection
    RAI
    light guards
    LPG conversion.
    Seperate G/Box oil cooler.

A quick pic of when a certain Mr Bodsy visited for a G/Box flush.

Jobs so far that have been done;

    Gearbox flush
    new front pads
new Meyle HD lower front arms
    front height sensors
    new EA1000 battery
    replacement amp
    new uprated boot struts
    spare wheel & STT tyre
full set of spark plugs and coil packs
    new Pipercross air filter
    PCV valve
    tensioner & belt
    fan shroud (was missing).

Further mods so far include;
LED dynamic smoked side indicator lights, LED number plate lights, dual voltage display on the dash, D4 chrome stalks.

I have just purchased a heated D4 wheel, pcb boads, clockspring, auto dipping int mirror & rain sensor, so some retro-fit mods to come soon.

I have tried to document the jobs I have done on my YouTube channle so it will help other owners going forward.

It's been fairly reliable, only bad thing a week before we were due to take it to Sardinia it started missing on cylinder 4, I ran out of time to investigate it so we ended up taking my D2 TD5. I think it was just a bare wire from the LPG system or a blocked injector, been fine ever since. !

More to come soon.

Nice 1, just picked up a D3 v8 for my missus to replace her tdv6. How are you finding the stt tyres for noise ?

Here is a quick shot of the interior after a full led interior bulb upgrade and new blue bulb for the ignition barrel.

Re: Mrs Troll's V8

STT tyres are bloody noisy !!

I've just fitteda a new set of Radar Renegade RT+ on my D2 TD5 and they are really quiet, well please with them so far. Need to test them off road but so far an improvment to the previous BFG Muds I ran.

I need to replace some of the LED's in the D3, some have broken.

Welcome to the V8 club.

I just want to say that after I reset the steering angle sensor we have had no more bongs, we have done 4 long journeys and not a peep, where as before it used to bong "special programs" and lower the suspension. power off and back on then it would be ok for approx another 35 minutes.

So if you are getting this issue, try that "free" fix.

Still waiting for some good weather to do part 2 of my heated D4 steering wheel retro-mod.

After that I hope to retro-fit auto wipers & headlights, which will require a new windscreen.

Engine has been sweet, so i'll prob give it a oil/filter change in the spring which means removing all the bloody under body protection... joy.

Happy V8 ing

No Haynes Available For Petrol

Hi Guys, I was disappointed to find Mr Haynes didn't do a Petrol version of his manual, any suggestions for an alternative. Cheers

Most of it is the same… I mean besides the obvious stuff associated with the different engine.

My suggestion would be this forum, landroverforums.com which is mostly “LR3” (so 4.4 liter V8 or 4.0 liter V6, both petrol) and has pretty much all issues and fixes you might need for your V8. And then there’s YouTube of course….. Whistle Whistle search for something and add LR3 there, too, and you’ll find whatever you need.

Thumbs Up

I'd agree wholeheartedly, I rarely check the Haynes manual other than for torque settings etc.

Finally installed my Disco 4 heated steering wheel, happy to report it worked first time.

How to video now on my YT channel.

We also have purchased a roof tent, annex and a 270 awning, so plenty to keep me busy.

We have booked up our first greenlaning trip in the D3, a weekend covering Salisbury Plain, and then a weekend in wales. Lets see how it copes.

Report update, since resetting the steering angle sensor we have had absolutely no bongs what so ever, including spending 2 days on Salisbury Plain on the rough and muddy stuff.

It's going for an LPG service on Monday and a repair to the pipe by the tank as it's got a split in it.

Roof tent is on, as is the 270 Awning, great stuff and very easy to set up.

We are off to Wales next weekend, staying at Coco's wild camp and doing some lanes.

The only issue we have is the head unit has stopped working, and when you turn it on after some seconds you get a system failed shutting down message, which then turns off the top screen too. I suspect the head unit is knackered. It's a bit intermittent.
